That could be it then although the houses that I recall actually look more like the ones in Valley Stream. I remember the neighborhood as mostly or all black, but I can't be sure that it was. It could be just the way that I remember it considering that most of the kids that we played with were black. I guess that I could ask my parents and know for sure, but what's the fun in that? ;) |

From that area, one was able to get a decent view of some of the planes as they slowly approached JFK, but without much of the noise that those under the flight paths had. |

There's certainly a difference between just merely having a de facto domestic only airport for a metro area of 1 million residents and an international gateway for the most populated city in Western civilization. Second best was driving along the roads at JFK and having the moonroof of my brother's Celica open while a 747 taxis above on an overpass. It's a bit perturbing to see a jet engine sit over your head and create thoughts of "will I die today if that falls on me right now". |

I've always questioned everything and if the answers weren't good enough, i would not accept them. While it may take some suspension of common sense to believe in the Assumption of Mary, I will go along with the abstract, the allegorical and the philosophical but I'll be damned if some drunken priest can get between me and God. A collar doesn't make someone better than me. Not even the Pope. People have to earn the title "Better Than Me" and Holy Orders are insufficient for me to bestow them such a title. Priests and nuns know this. They like me anyway. When i was in Italy, I only attended the very first Sunday school class for Confirmation and never returned. I questioned certain premises of the Doctrine. I denounced Limbo as a crock of shit. Because I liked the teacher (a former nun), I decided to not return because I did not want to cause trouble since the other kids tended to agree with my point of view which is wrong in a classroom setting. The teacher called me and my mother and asked why I stopped going and I told her the truth. I got a waiver and was confirmed. The other kids would always ask me how i could get away with it. I'd tell them the truth, that is: "I have no idea". |

I had great arguments with them over this and that and most priests are quite laid back about it all, particularly discussing some of the stupid internal politics of the church.Confession isn't really done around here anymore, the attitude being pretty much "you know what you did, pray and don't do it again." Besides ... since we're in a rural area with not enough priests to go around, attending to mass takes up too much of their time to bother with confessions. If you know the drill, you can take care of it with God on your own time. :) |
