My favorite FDR story concerns Harry Truman. FDR wanted HST as his running mate for the 1944 campaign. Truman demurred, and FDR called him over to the White House. "It's bad enough I have to fight Hitler, Tojo, and the Republicans, but to have to split my party in the middle of a world war--that I will not abide, Harry. Are you sure you want to be the one to do that?"FDR guilted Truman right into the White House. |
