Thinking about moving |

Posted by Eli From Texas on Fri Nov 4 10:31:03 2005 For all New Yorkers:If I moved from a big college town in Texas, to Bronxville, NY, what would be the hardest thing for me to get used to?? I saw today on the news that the unemployment rate is only 5% now, so I hope getting a job there would be fairly easy. |

I see that you are from a Red state. Although Republicans exist in NYC and New York State in general, they have a very different mentality to the ones in Texas... In the suburbs, you can live a Lone Star lifestyle, pretty much, driving your SUV and all. But the people -- the mentality -- it takes a little getting used to. AEM7AC |

Well, I voted for Bush, and I like a lot of the Republicans in our Government (more than certain Democrats), but I have VERY Democratic beliefs. I am pro choice, pro gay marriage, against guns, etc. That's one reason why I want to get out of Texas b/c I'm sick of conservatives in the Bible Belt, and all the closed minded people here. I would like to be around Liberals for a little while! |

Is it because they stand for certain beliefs (honesty, fiscal conservatism, personal responsibility, independence, patriotism, xenophobia), or is it because they are local (i.e. from Texas or from the South at least) so you can identify with them personally? I try not to get too involved in politics, because I think that politicians are all equally corrupt, regardless of what they stand for and how they live their personal lives and what they say they believe in and how they actually make policy. But when given the choice between Bush (Conn.) and Kerry (Mass.), I would vote for Kerry anyday simply because I believe he will bring pork to Massachusetts (and I live here and I benefit personally from the pork.) You sound like you are a socially liberal but fiscally conservative, good, old-fashioned American. I think you will do well in the Northeast. Try to visit Montauk Beach while you are here. It's very romantic. If you're ever in Boston, drop me an email (I'm in a long-term relationship, but I always like to show my city to the people.) AEM7AC |

I like a lot of the Republicans in our GovernmentInteresting considering that Texas sets the standard for bad governance. (Note that NY is not bad, its just dysfunctional). Anyway, from what I have heard NYC has the taxes from hell and a host of other problems. I'd move to one of those Gerrymandered purple districts in TX and then vote to change the status quo there. Just remember, it dosen't matter who the people are, just how they vote. I'd elect a chicken if he would party-line vote against bush and his greedy, shortsighted republican adgenda. |

History may be quaint, but when it's February and your heating bills are through the roof because your colonial house has no insulation, it takes a true romantic to still love it. When you realize that all the companies are relocating to places where rent is lower and the Feds don't want to spend money up here creating jobs because "we're too liberal"... you have to make the cash flow somehow. But other than that, I love it here, and I've been here for four years. I've had to teach high school just to make rent (but actually I have always wanted to teach anyway, so it was just a great excuse to do it when engineering hit the craps after the Big Dig ended), and I've had my fair share of mishaps. But I haven't left yet and I don't know when I will. (Sounding like a true New Englander.) You sound like my girlfriend. She is from Olkaholma and she moved to Boston "to be with the history". :) AEM7AC |

Generally, the unemployment rate is high for people with no skills. If you have skills (and I believe you do - I haven't closely followed your other threads) then your chances of getting a job are very good.However, if you live in Bronxville and work anywhere that is not either very close by or easily accessible from the rail line through Bronxville (i.e., in Manhattan or White Plains), you will probably need a car to get to work, or else have a VERY long commute on public transportation. And you may find that the job you get is on Long Island and have a very long drive to work. You can't judge the length of a driving commute by its distance. Also, rents in the entire NYC area may make what you are paying in Texas seem like peanuts. Rents are particularly high near most areas where the public transportation is excellent. |
