Alot of people on this thread thought by the end of this year BK would serve beer at more of their locations. BK may not expand on serving beer and discontinue serving it at their one location.

But people drink beer all over the country. Three of the top four states in beer consumption per capita are New Hampshire, Montana and North Dakota. Nevada is Number 1, but that's likely because of tourism. beer me.

I can mostly agree with that except for rating Wendy's and BK above Del Taco. Sacrilege! ;)

I like the McDonalds breakfast, but it's more expensive for what you get than than Jack's, Carls, and Del Taco. And speaking of breakfast, one of the cool things about the western chains compared to the national ones is that they serve their main menu (burgers, tacos, etc) whenever they are open. You can't get a quarter pounder at McDonalds at 8am, but you can get a bacon double cheeseburger and tacos at Jack's whenever you want. And have you ever tried the breakfast burger at Carl's? It's a burger, hash browns, eggs, ketchup, etc all together! It's a bigger meal for the same price more or less as a McDonalds egg mcmuffin combo.

And speaking of being open, in LA most of the Jacks, Carls and Del Tacos are open 24 hours. The national chains all close at 11pm or 12am for some reason.

I hate to offend you, but I find Del Taco to be mostly tasteless. A plus is that they're open 24 hours, a minus is that the food is so bland.

I don't like eggs (don't know why, but I just don't like them) and McDonald's has the "chicken biscuit" which doesn't come with eggs (immediately vaults McDonald's to #1 in breakfast IMHO). Some McDonald's (in Arizona and up here in the Bay Area) are open 24 hours. I think, as a chain, there are more Jack's open 24 hours than any other chain. Some Wendy's also close around 2a.m. or so.

No offense taken. Not everyone has the same tastes. For example a coworker told me about that chicken biscuit sandwich and I've tried it a couple of times and don't like it at all. And I really like chicken.

The Del Taco's here are much fresher tasting than the Taco Bell and they don't have all of those weird non-Mexican sauces that Taco Bell uses.

With the exception of In-N-Out, I have yet to eat at any of the non-McDonalds fast food chains that you listed. Next time come to LA!

Despite the allure of some cheap airfares to San Diego on JetBlue*, it's unlikely that I'll go to Southern California until Expo Line opens up on 2011 unless other options are exhausted. Otherwise, my next venture to the West Coast may be a Portland-Seattle-Vancouver trip which seems fun, but has logistical challenges given that the two cities at the end point have limited flights and higher fares than the midpoint. Admittedly, while LA has moved up a bit in terms of my interest in visiting especially under the ideal conditions of a San Diego-LA-Las Vegas trip, there are still other places that have priority like various areas in Europe (Autobahn + Stadtbahn/U-Bahn/Metro + TGV/ICE/AVE), Toronto, Montreal, and to a lesser extent Chicago.

BTW I don't know if you or anyone else realizes it, but LA could have five rail lines under construction simultaneously by 2013 if Metro gets the New Starts money that it is asking for (plus the Measure R money that they are already counting on). Expo phase 2, the downtown connector, the crenshaw line, the foothill gold line extension, and the purple line extension to UCLA.

I think that the economy has a lot to do with it. LA bus riders are at the low end of the economy and the low end always suffers first and longest.

LA really does some good things with transit. I only ride trains in other cities so I don't get the whole picture to see how they do things. But in LA little things like color coded buses, a 12-minute/frequent service bus map, and new buses make riding here seem ok. But buses can be infrequent and have lots of delays depending on where you're headed. We have a few bloggers (like this one) that are convinced that LA has the worst run transit agency and the worst bus service in the country and nothing will convince them otherwise. Mostly they are the car free type that gave up driving for green/social reasons that are upset that Metro didn't make drastic improvements to accommodate their lifestyle changes. They swear that nobody in NYC ever has to wait for the bus and that their buses aren't crowded and float above traffic. Well not quite, but almost.

Another blogger likes to say that the worst run transit system in the country is whatever one you ride every day. lol

Los Angeles has a Stadtbahn :-)

Once I found out about Expo, it made sense to simply push back going there until the line opens up since I'd probably resent going before it opens up and missing the chance to ride brand new trackage.

I don't know if you or anyone else realizes it, but LA could have five rail lines under construction simultaneously by 2013

By United States standards, for LACMTA have multiple projects being built concurrently would be rather impressive, but even the current pace of Metro is certainly decent given that some systems haven't expanded in years or squandered their money on useless projects (MBTA). Even if only Expo Phase 2 and Downtown Connector gets built, you'll still have something remotely useful.

Interesting. Those are the big three overall as well. NYC must not be a burger/fast food type of city given the lack of competition.

We're very likely to get more built than that since Measure R funds those plus Crenshaw and the purple line extension. It'll just take 10+ years longer.

We're a major burger city, perhaps the tops!

But those are the major fast food chain burgers. Big difference. White Castle is a distant #4.

We have some growing chains that are much, much better, though. Like Shake Shack, which is often sublime. I didn't think too much of Five Guys. Blue-9 is alright. I liked Fatburger.

They very well should as they are considered to be "fully funded" by the additional 1% sales tax that we voted on in 2008 that is expected to raise $25 billion. This isn't just a list of planned projects, this is a list of fully funded projects. This is not at all like hoping that the SAS gets built because the SAS has no funding for the future phases.

Of course anything can happen and without additional money from the federal government (and something more than zero is a virtual guarantee) they won't be completely built for at least 20 years.

No waaayyy dude! :)

LA is definitely the top city for burgers! Saying that NYC might be the tops for burger is like me saying that LA is tops for hot dogs (instead of Chicago) or pizza (instead of Chicago)! We have other burger chains as well. Tommy's is famous although they only have a few locations, but they have spawned dozens and maybe hundreds of imitators (Tommies, Tommi's, Original Tommies, on and on). Fatburger was started out here by a black woman from south LA. Plus all of our local mom and pop diner style places are essentially burger/taco places. And there are hundreds of those. Maybe one thousand.

And I have a Five Guys down the street from me. I like it and have eaten there a few times.

Believe it or not, I just stumbled upon a new El Pollo Loco in North Bergen, N.J. recently. It turs out they started expanding east of the Mississippi a few years ago. Click HERE, and then put in the zip code 07047.

It sounds like these locations will be in tourist areas, and will rely on foot traffic alone.
