My very first VCR (JCPenny brand, built by RCA), I had from mid-1987 until mid-1996, when I upgraded to a newer model. It was still working at that time, but the heads (2-head) were beginning to go, I could've used it for awhile longer if absolutely necessary. Besides, I wanted to upgrade (4-head, stereo, 8-event/30-day timer, yada yada). The replacement lasted less than 2 years! Crapped out shortly before I moved from Southern California to South Florida, so I just pitched it and bought a new one after I arrived in SoFla. That one I didn't like that much (got it at Worst Buy), so bought a second one a few months later. It was handy having two, as I was able to copy some things I had taped for a friend of mine. That one lasted until 2001 (3 years). Got another one, lasted 1 year. Got yet another one--4 months! After that, I said the hell with it, and did without until about 2 years ago, when I got the DVD recorder. I think manufacturers send all their shit to South Florida b/c 95% of the ppl living down here are too fucking stupid to complain or do anything about it :(

That's a shame. The two vcrs [same model] that I had both crapped out at different times, but both due to the motors just giving out.

It can work fine for one moment, but another time if I try to record or play something, the machine would shut down and when I turn the power on, it would just rewind back like 15min. And even if set on timer record, it will do this. I've missed out as much as 5-7min of a program and that really pissed me off [especially since the program didn't repeat again in a few hours]. And still to this day that show I was trying to tape hasn't reaired yet.

They're good for the stuff you want to record when you can't watch it live all the time.

VCRs have been doing that for well over 20 years.

I no longer know when the shows (non-sports) that I want to watch are actually on

VCRs have been doing that for well over 20 years.

It's a pain in the ass having to switch out the tape, and keep track of timeslot changes when they occur. Not to mention there's usually a limit to the number of programs you can create. My VCR (admittedly a 1989 model) could only do 8. Any of those 8 could be a recurring recording but basically that meant you could only watch 8 programs or 8 blocks of programs. Then one has to keep track of which tape has what and when (what time on the tape, or what order of recording). A DVR is to a VCR what a computer with a GUI is to a computer with a text based OS. I'd pay more for a GUI.

Extending that analogy, compare a computer that can multitask to one that can't. a DVR to a VCR is the same. I can't watch any prerecorded program on a VCR while a new one is recording, and if I expect to record something soon, I would have to know that and then make sure to set the right tape and stop watching the recording and either watch the new program or something else while it records. I don't have to worry about that with a DVR. A VCR only allows you to record one thing and watch another if either program is unscrambled analog cable, it doesn't work with a box unless you have a second box (or a Dish Network dual tuner box with TV2 connected to the same TV) and in order for that, some (relatively) complex wiring is involved. A DVR allows one to watch one thing while recording another, or record two things while watching a prior recording. That is absolutely impossible with a VCR unless it has two decks.

Finally, VCRs have nothing remotely comparable to the ability to pause live TV.

So yes, VCR have been "doing that" for well over 20 years (actually it's well over 30), just like horses and buggies did transportation for thousands of years until trains and cars were invented. I'll take the train or car.

That's akin to cell phone users who no longer know their own cell phone number.

Not at all. How is a 10 digit number unique to me the same as the timeslot and channel of a number of programs subject to change with little or no notice? How often am I going to tell people when a program airs vs. what my phone number is?

For me, it seems 8 different timers is all I can set as well, but I can set a particular one for a specific day like House [8pm every mondays] and that's taken care of and i don't need to set it again.
But yes it's a pita to change the tapes. But since it's a 1 hr block, i write on the label that comes with the tape of what programs i taped on it and if all 6 hours are used up, then I use a new tape.

Then you have to keep buying tapes! I would use the same tapes over and over until the quality would go south, then I would get new tapes. The eight program limit means that you can record only eight shows unless two or more are on the same channel consecutively, in which case you can use one recording.

The VCR I had allowed you to set up a recording to repeat on a particular day every week or every M-F every week. It was not possible to create a daily repeat unless you used three slots (one for M-F and one each for Sat and Sun), but programs like that are not common. It was a pain in the ass to record programs that start after Midnight, like Conan, because their repeat pattern is Tue-Sat! This is still a pain on TiVo but it rarely comes up because needing to record stuff manually is unusual.

Right now, I'm watching "Closely Watched Trains" while it's recording "Night of the Comet" from channel 6's "ThisTV" subchannel off the government cheesebox and "Day the Earth Stood Still" from HBOEast off the dish ... though I have pays, don't require them.

Yeah i know, but i don't keep everything. A tape is about 6 hrs 12 min on ep speed [which is the current max that I have]. So I always have at least a 2 min gap between shows so if I want to keep something, I'd just tape something else either before or after that 'block'.

I dunno, I guess I don't mind the hassle of taking the tape out and inserting a new one. I've been doing it for years and I guess it's like 2nd nature to me.

How? Why would it matter if the VCR changes the clock by itself? If not, then it's only a problem if you forget to change it.

If you're talking about the cable/satellite company's program guide, then your service sucks. I've never had a problem with daylight savings. On Fall backward it has two columns for 2:00 and 2:30 AM and on Spring forward it skips from 1:30 to 3:00 as one might expect.

Back in the VCR days (you'll get a kick out of this) we had tapes reserved for "one shot recordings" to be played back at convenience and then recycled ... instead of writing up a label, we cut these cheap "magic slate" things and glued them to the cassettes. You'd write with the stylus on the plastic top sheet and when the tape was watched, you'd rip the sheet up to empty it and it was ready to go again, over and over!

You probably had some when you were a kid, and all you needed was a paper slicer to cut them to size to fit on the edge of the tapes!

Me too. I watch almost everything after recording on the VCR. I don't mind paying for a service I get each month like the TV or the phone. Recording shows used to be a one time function.

I am going to write a letter (yes a snail mail letter) to complain. IMHO they handled this very poorly. Even if they decided to get rid of it, would have hurt them to warn us.

I blogged about this as well. I actually searched for "vcr timer time warner" before writing mine to see if there was anything I could link to. I found this post after that.

And I think it's great that the search NOW shows both my blog and this thread on page 1. Rather than finding out where the VCR timer went/didn't go, you see some disgruntled customers.

The American "ATSC" standard absolutely sucks for dropouts and other failure modes. In Europe and most of the rest of the planet, they went with the DVB standard which has numerous discrete carriers and doesn't suffer the effects of multipath and atmospheric nonlinearities.

Well, sooner or later you will deal with Comcast, as they are buying NBC/Universal for $12M, assuming the Feds don't kill the deal.

What the fuck is wrong with you? He's stating a fact, not making a suggestion.

Having said that, Larry left the glass on the table people who have unintelligible accents SHOULD cover them!

"He's stating a fact, not making a suggestion."

He's stating a rather totally unnecessary fact....like who really cares....as if to say she was wearing a red dress....unnecessary crap just to be pointed about the fact the maybe someone hasn't spent years developing an accent that is shoothing to "average American Joe Plumber"....lol....yea.... :)
