Let me clear something up right now... soccer is not a sport. Be that as it may, someone called Kaka scored a goal for Brazil but the quote unquote referee said "Play On" or something to that effect. It was an absolutely horrendous call by the referee. It would have tied the score at 2 after the USA led 2-0 at the half. I watched a few minutes of this so called event, the Confederation Cup, on ESPN and the entire time the background noise sounds like a swarm of bumblebees. Soccer is a waste of time other than for those boys and girls 8 years old or younger. It is unwatchable.

It's because the action is so much different than American sports. It might seem to an American used to football that not much happens, but a foreign person watching American football wonders why players stand around so much more than they play. It's a matter of perspective.

Obviously some people like it as some like trains, i.e. it's a borderline-inexplicable thing. On the other hand plenty of others like it because you can swear blind at people you don't like, i.e. opposition or even your own team's players, or opposition supporters inside the ground, without chance of recrimination. You can also have a good laugh if you know the people who sit nearby and you can also consume copious amounts of beer both before and after the game in nearby pubs.

There is also amusement to be had from fellow spectators. For example, where I go every now and then there is a bloke who sits in front who will remain silent for most of the game even though things may be going badly wrong on the pitch. But when he is triggered by something unimportant he has a tendency to blow his top and indulge in a foul-mouthed rant which condemns everyone associated with the club, from the Chairman to the women in the pie hut.

Some of the best baseball games are pitching duels that end 1-0, 2-1, etc. The standard for perfection in baseball is not allowing anybody on base...a Perfect Game.

I personally think that baseball and softball should be re-admitted to the Olympics and stuff like trampoline, synchronized swimming and rythmic gymnastics should be eliminated. I would also like to see rugby and roller sports at the Summer Games.
Maybe baseball will be re-admitted if MLB starts sending players like the NHL and NBA do but in the meantime they should at least bring back women's softball.

The rest of the world feels America dominates baseball [well at least the women's softball team], so that's probably why they got rid of it, plus it's not 'worldly enough' to Europe.
I dunno about sending players out, I would guess owners would worry about their star players being injured overseas just like in the WBC. Cano and Marte both had some problems. [Dunno if that's the main reason to blame on why Marte sucked this year though, thankfully Cano rebounded and is hitting well.]

There's no equivalent in soccer so I just gave the full seven points as those are not usually missed. Extra points and field goals are silly because they have nothing to do with the rest of the game. That's all that's left from soccer I suppose.

No, it's close enough for comparison. Football really has an artificially inflated perception of how many points are scored because of the odd scoring system.

It's not an "odd" system of scoring because you have to weigh differently on a "touchdown" or just getting a 3 point field goal. Two field goals don't equal one touchdown. A touchdown is the ultimate, and that's why it points more. And if you don't think the extra point after a touchdown is "silly", tell that to many a team that lost a game by "1 point". It's not the same as being down a touchdown.

What I mean by silly is that kicking has nothing to do with the rest of the game. It makes about as much sense as soccer giving six points for a goal and installing a basketball rim to award an extra point for a made free throw.

And don't get me wrong, football is by far my favorite sport. I rarely watch soccer during football season.

While I don't agree that kicking has "nothing to do with the game", as field goals are a REAL part of the whole game, that's what the goal posts are all set up for - Kicking the ball. But that being said, kicking isn't the MAIN part of the game. Throwing, catching, and running the ball are. But that doesn't mean kicking has "nothing" to do with the game - it IS a part of the game. If you get 3 field goals and the other team only got one touchdown, you win the game....so even though the score is HALF that of a touchdown, it has plenty of meaning in the game.

You don't get what I mean. Of course they help decide the outcome of the game, but they have nothing to do with the rest of the action. IOW you are not typically allowed to kick the ball except in limited situations.

To further illustrate (or confuse) imagine if in baseball you got 6 points for scoring across the plate, but then then you could roll the ball between two sticks to get one more point. WTF would that have to do with hitting, pitching, and catching? Football is built around running and throwing. The field goals are remnants of the sport that it derived from - soccer.

We don't have to agree, but that's how I see it. And like I said, I love football!

I doubt they will do as well as they did in the Confederations thing, this being because you will more than likely have Germany, England and some more of the reasonable European teams in there. Add to that the likes of Argentina and so on. Although the US could draw an easy group and possibly end up in the quarter-finals.

No one considers pro wrestling a sport. It's entertainment.

Hockey is soccer on skates with sticks. Hockey, soccer, basketball, lacrosse are all basically the same sport.

Since I'm an avid sports fan, I am equipped to understand what it's like to get wrapped up in that sort of thing (f'n K-Rod walking Mariano Rivera with the bases loaded !@#$%&), and even sports that don't interest me much I usually pay attention to (I watched the last few holes of the US Open in Bethpage, the last 5 minutes of the NBA Finals game 7, etc), but soccer is unwatchable. It has no juice, no rush, no nothing. If America was to make it to the World's cup final round against FRANCE, I couldn't watch.
