Kosher pet food? Interesting concept. For a dog or cat the question of food being kosher is moot. They neither have the intellect or awareness to care. After all, the laws governing Kosher food have their roots in reasons of health and religeon - neither of which can animals appreciate. Now, as for the pet owner, if they keep a Kosher home, they may opt for kosher food for their pets only to keep their dishes and utinsils from coming in contact with non-kosher foods. Of course since the liklihood of commercially available kosher pet food is nill, if one were to prefer to that option, they'd likely need to prepare it themselves.

Yes. You can feed your pets/animals with no problem. The only prohibition is against the human eating or drinking.

Or what about on shabos-manual can openers okay

I'd have to ask a rabbi. My cats eats dry cat food and that comes from a bag or container with a lid.

But according to this link, it seems like opening a can (with a manual can opener, like you said) would be ok.

Interesting. I did hear already that you are allowed to "feed" children, or sick people can eat on fast days (as Pig stated), so should have assumed it was alright to handle food for pets too.

I found this a little puzzling from the link you provided:

When tearing any packagaing, one must be sure that no letters or pictures are torn. It is permitted to cut or tear between the letters of a word or between words

I wonder what the difference would be if you didn't tear for example the word through a letter in "Doritos" or if you split the "r" in Doritos, which is wrong to do.

I suppose it looks kinda bad when people who are sick die cause their religion. I wonder how many of the 6000 years they've been at it it took them to realize eating on high holidays was good.

By the same token I wonder how long it will take Christian Scientists to realize that hospitals are not infirmeries of the devil....

There's only one High Holiday during which eating is bad.

And there was never a time that sick people eating on fast days was not allowed, at least not as recorded. I'm sure there have been sects that felt differently, but anybody can make up any crazy ideas about religion that they want, and you'll use that as a blanket condemnation of it all.

No biggie. That webpage said you are allowed to open a package on Shabbos, so long as it doesn't rip through one of the letters on the packaging. For example, if you rip through the "D" in "Doritos" (I don't know if they are kosher, but for argument's sake say they are) it is bad, but if you rip between the "D" and the "o" it's okay. I just found that a bit strange, but whatever.

Tuna Cans
Nowadays, it is permitted to open tuna cans on Shabbos since they are discarded after their contents are removed. Even though the contents of the can are not removed immediately, it is still not considered as if one is completing a utensil, since a tuna can has no purpose except to be opened and thrown away (10). It is forbidden, however, to remove the metal lid of a can which is meant to serve as a storage bin for the item for a lengthy period of time [such as a soup croutons can, etc.] since these type of containers are made to last for a longer period of time [than a tuna can]. Such cans are normally not emptied out right away, but are retained for as long as their contents last (11).

This is a very interesting issue. Conincidently the examples of tuna and opening the can, as well as the proper way of discarding the can, is stated in the link.

True, however, tuna is a good example in general because it's something in a can that you don't have heat or cook to eat (unlike soups, vegetables, etc), which you are not allowed to do on Shabbos, AFAIK.
