Well let me respond to your post:I have a honest cultural question: I read an article (couldn't re-find it, sorry) that says Blacks earn 1/10th of the wealth of whites. Add to that the other negivite statistics that have been done on this issue(crime rates, drug addiction, neighborhood health), I have one question to my fellow Black Americans: Why?... That's a crazy statistic if you ask me. I think Peter had it right where they probably have 1/10th of net assets. Why is there so much violence in Black areas? Same with drop-outs, drug addicts, abortions, and poverty. I mean, I feel very angry that I read articles that say Blacks (as well has hispanics, to some extent) are suffering from these problems more than whites. It all comes down to lack of motivation to finish school and being educated. Coming from a black person, I'm angry myself that they have some of these stereotypes, although the media portrays the situation as if it is a black or Hispanic epidemic, even though in terms of drug abuse, it has NO COLOR LINES! Are Black areas improving? Is racism going down? Are more minorites rising to middle-upper middle class? How many blacks are going to college? Those numbers have gone way up and yes racism has gone down although now I believe black folks are excluded from certain things in other ways, like employment. Nowadays black folks are starting to uplift themselves and it shows not all of us are thugs and shit. The productive folks far outnumbers the ignorant, period. But then abother thought...Is it really true? Do Blacks really suffer from this more than our white neighbors? Is it all one big racist stereotype? Whichever side of this issue your on, whatever you have to say, go ahead and say it. I like to keep it real so do I think blacks have a harder time living in this country, absolutely. Can we uplift ourselves out of the typical ghetto behavior and such, absolutely. Are there stereotypes, absolutely, which would be the point that all black folks have the thug image and that all we're good at is committing crimes and shit, which is total BS. Black folks shouldn't blame others, which has been too common in my view. If we help each other out instead of being so damned jealous, we will prosper and get that foolish image off of us, I will bet on that. I like this question even though I usually like to stay away from these types of topics but hey its all around so what can we do. Sure I don't agree with some of your views [and past threads you posted] but learning to agree to disagree can be productive. Some people just don't know what minorities, especially black folks, go through in life but I will say I'm very secure of myself and who I am. I know this post looks pretty negitive. But I really do have a honest question. Let's keep it civil and nice. I mean, this could really be a productive conversation. Remeber, I suffer from some of these issues too, so don't think I don't feel this... I also say this topic can be productive. Some people cannot accept the honesty of what's going on in the real world [being outside of transit issues for example] that's all. |

Posted by JPC on Fri Apr 22 16:16:37 2005, in response to Re: A honest cultural question..., posted by Train Dude on Thu Apr 21 17:39:38 2005. I'd like to see where that figure comes from. I have a hard time believing that, say, the average white person makes $100,000 a year and the average black person makes $10,000 a year. If the statement were "the average black person makes 70% of what the average white person makes" that'd square with reason, but to argue a factor-of-ten discrepancy strains credulity. But you must also look at other factors. In the academic community, for example, blacks and other minorities are substantially underrepresented, both as students (undergraduate and graduate) and as faculty members (junior/adjunct and tenured). The trouble is, if you've ever done any work on an admissions or a hiring committee: there simply aren't that many minority applicants. Even if you accepted every single minority applicant, regardless of qualification (and some of these would have qualifications substantially below the current minimum acceptable standards), and then accepted only the best of the best of the white and Asian students, you'd still have a hard time getting ratios anywhere near the population average (currently blacks and Hispanics comprise something like 20-25% of the nation's population). And in large cities, where minorities actually outnumber whites and Asians, the situation is simply hopeless! So is the fact that there is a dearth of black professors the fault of university hiring committees? Of course not! The fault lies much deeper, primarily in our elementary education system and in the lack of parental support during early eduction, in my opinion. And even if all those things changed 100% for the better tomorrow, the employment situation would only gradually improve, because those improvements affect people who will not enter the workforce for a decade or more, and people currently in the workforce, who were educated under the old system and live with its results, will be in the workforce for several more decades. So unless we're going to kill off everyone over 12, the improvements are going to take time to work their way through the system. Simply put, the reason for the discrepancy is not that employers pay particular employees less because of the color of their skin: that's illegal. Can't do it. The reason for the discrepancy is that minorities, unfortunately, often have qualifications (education and work experience, for the most part, as well as criminal record or lack thereof) that only make them suitable for lower-paying jobs, whereas whites and Asians are more likely to possess advanced degrees and have prior experience suiting them to high-paying fields. The same is true, unfortunately, for men and women - men are more likely to possess advanced degrees and have job skills suitable to higher-paying careers, although this is changing. Now, if you corrected the statistics, to compare minorities to whites working in the same lines of work (construction workers to construction workers, teachers to teachers, janitors to janitors, doctors to doctors, unemployeds to unemployeds and so on), then you'd find a virtually zero difference between wages. And if there was anyone out there who was explicitly paying someone less because they were black or female, I'd be the first person out there complaining. |

I agree with some of your points but I think some of it is just wrong and perhaps looks like a sense of insecurity [maybe], you'll see what I think by breaking the post down. It's a combination of racism and rap music. Well yes I agree but up to a certain point. There have been great strides in black America over the last few decades but there are still vestiges of racism. I'm not convinced that if a black and white person with the same qualifications applied for the same job then they'd have an equal shot at that job. I'm also convinced that there is still racism in some ways, its just not as blatant as before. Elimination of racism in our society would be a great achievement in our lifetime but the ignorant will still be around, unfortunately. As for rap music, it encourages blacks to act like gangsters, get women pregnant and not take care of their babies, and smoke weed. It frowns upon getting an education. 50 Cent is glorified because he got shot 9 times, not because he got a Ph D. Instead of realizing how close he came to dying and trying to change he glorified his near death experience. That only applies to blacks, encouragement of being gangstas through rap music? I don't think so. Hey I listen to rap music and its all a matter of the dipshits not knowing that the artists is using these gangsta images to sell records and I bet most of these guys aren't shit in terms of being tough and lack street cred I mean give me a break. As for the example using 50¢, well I will agree that he used his experience to being shot 9 times to get where he is now and it worked but in the real world it would be a different scenario. It is unfortunate that the black folks who do prosper like becoming a CEO, doctor, lawyer, etc are shunned BUT on the flipside...lets say 2/3 of those people would forget where they came from if they lived a rough life and would think they're too good to be black, and those are the people I can't stand and I feel they're the equivalent of shit in my view. Instead of emulating positive blacks like Colin Powell (you may not like his policies but you have to respect him) and Magic Johnson blacks want to be thugs just like in these rap videos. Again it all comes down to education. I respect Colin Powell as a black man for getting to where he was but I don't agree with much of his views but Magic Johnson is a good example. |

Not really an answer to your post Elias, but this entire thread has stirred up some old thoughts for me and posting them as a response to your thoughtful words seemed like as good a place as any to post them.Sometimes people seem obsessed with things like "Are whites smarter than blacks?", "Are men smarter than women?". Some people will reflexively answer "No! Not possible!", but I think a better answer is -- "Who cares?". Let's suppose you could create the perfect intelligence test and it was scored on a basis of 0 (effectively brain dead) to 1000 (flat out genius). Everyone in the world took the test and at the end of the day the average woman scored 498 and the average man scored 502. What would that actually tell you? It wouldn't tell you that any man is smarter than any woman. Just that the average man is smarter than the average woman. If you were trying to hire someone, or admit them to a college -- you'd still want to meet them, or look at other information because there are plenty of women out there who would score much higher than 498 (even 1000), and plenty of men who would score much lower than 502 (even 0). Point is -- don't let anyone define you by the color of your skin, or what is or isn't between your legs. People often develop stereotypes based on averages -- but the world doesn't deal in averages. It deals in individuals. |

Is that your solution to the nazi's? Is this your idea of diversity and non-conformity? If it is, than *you* are the problem. Because this isn't accepted no matter who you are. We live in a society based on laws and rules written and unwritten. You create a nasty environment, you get kicked out or locked up. Don't be blaming your race or some shit that happened centuries ago on what is going on in present day. As the buddist say, only the present moment exists. To do otherwise is racist, especially to get special treatment. Which the whole point of this thread is bascially racist. I dont' see any other race on this planet, which all of them live in the US having these problems or starting these threads. They do just fine. ANd number two, I never had someone in my life tell me I can't walk somewhere or on a paved surface. I wasn't walking on the grass. That is some f-ed up bullshit. Do I look like some fucking thug? You go the bus terminal and have people bug you for some spare change so he can go see his "probation" officer. Stupid stories to panhandle. Is this the world you like living in?? But this thread is basically some affirmative action bullshit. Like I said before, there is no such thing as racism, it's culturism. Anyone who has some type of racism generally isn't in a position to effect you in any way. If you're going to blast music and have wild parties are 3am on a monday when everyone is going to sleep for work, you're going to have a problem no matter what race you are. This has nothing to do with conformity. If you have a problem with this, you are a menace to society and need to be locked up. DUH! I don't see where race is played out anywhere, except when you pull some "this is my culture" bullshit or affirmative action. Then you piss people off. I just called you on it. Now let's see what type of BS you going to pull outta your ass again. Race card don't work on me. Nor, like the sidewalk, have I ever been called a racist either. I'm going to keep posting on this particular thread for as long as I want. My advice to you, stay in the good classes, study, or get some homeschooling. Maybe get outside of the North. You'll do fine elsewhere. |

"I believe that they are, again generally speaking, being arrested and incarcerated because they broke the law. The police aren't to blame -- they are just doing their job."There is an issue here that relates to income disparity. If a kid in a poor neighborhood of any ethnicity does something illegal, such as setting off a firecracker or vandalizing a car in a small way, and is caught by a cop, he is more likely to be arrested, tried, and convicted of a crime than a kid committing the same crime in a comfortably well off neighborhood. In the well off neighborhood the cops will take the kid to his parents' house and give him a stern lecture in front of his parents. It's not necessarily the fault of individual police officers, but it is the fault of the policing system. |

Maybe I can make a generization that the higher income kid will have a less chance being from a broken home and sending him/her back will be punishment enough. If you take the kid to a house where there's noone there, and there's a single parent doing their two jobs, odds are not much may happen. That type of thing has a large bearing on how the kid ends up.I believe there are stats on that. |

Is that your solution to the nazi's?"The nice people who live in the nice neighborhood are most often responsible for this problem. In New York, for example, graffitti is often home-grown - but it's easier to rely on racial stereotypes (as you have in your posts) than think the problem through and work on solutions. In Kansas City, a hiring hall, usually the subject of stereotypes on LI, set up for migrant Mexican laborers was paired up with a police ministation. Icontributed a computer system to this effort. 911 calls on that street, mostly related to crimes against the laborers themselves by a few troublemakers, went from 15 a day to zero in amatter of a couple of weeks. The laborers had a place to take care of wage paperwork, a place to wash their clothes and shower, and a place to arrange workb assignments. The troublemakers were tracked with the help of the computer and software, and arrests were quicker. Immigration authorities deported the worst of them more quickly than they would otherwise. I wish you luck getting rid of your hatred and your insensitivity. You sure do have a lot of it. |

BTW, my state outlawed affirmative action, and without those glass ceilings, certain peoples enrollments in college have gone way up.But I forgot, I hate mexicans and graffitti right? I don't even hold the door open for them probably or buy fruit from their farm market stands. Graffitti is a cultural problem, where if you have a lot of it, you're bound to have a lot more, ifyou have none of it, you probably won't get much. But I forgot, graffitti must be a black only problem right? Because one or two of them is doing that I guess compared to the whole and a lot of them are 'white' kids. I guess if you support graffitti and defacing public and private probably, you must be an insensitive racist. Just like the cops, now i understand why people hate them. Wow this is turning pathetic. (It's easy to create this situation when you're making up a hypothetical!).Even if you think test scores might vary, I take a gander that with a sample size of 6 billion or so the averages would be significant to within a few decimal places. If you don't buy that, you can replace 498 with 480 and 502 with 520 in my example. The conclusions still hold. |

It takes the police an average of several minutes longer to respond to a call in other divisions, because ours is geographicaly smaller. But you know what? People still bitch about it. That's why I like Compstat. Police deployment should be data driven. |

You continuaklly confuse an agenda that does not favor entitlement programs with racism. Are you saying that ONLY blacks receive section 8 benifits? I'm sure you know better. |

Hasn't been printed since the program was lifted however. If you think crap schools like U of Michigan needs to give every student 200 points because their black, then what are you saying about people of color? Why not take 200 points away from every student who isn't a minority, which obviously means african american as there aint any other minorities around. You do good in high school in my state, you are guarenteed admission and funding to the state college of your choice in your first year, or maybe it was more than that. That's more than a lot more than these liberal affirmative action schools ever gave. |

Seriously, I'm glad your down in Florida, one less asshole to burn a cross on my yard. |

You are correct that Section 8 doesn't serve only blacks. In Philly, however, Section 8 housing served a predominantly black community -hence a vote against Section 8 would hurt mostly blacks in that region. |

I told you that I got my facts from an article. I apologized for not being able to find it again. People usually keep this stuff to themselves in a confined car with 3 other people etc. I have the Dr. Dean disease though where I can't keep my mouth shut. I'll set everyone off if i have to. The klansman statement in question is...i don't want to say wrong, but misleading. The original Klansmen, a fringe insurgent in the south after getting sick of carpetbaggers and reconsturction hated everyone. Jews, catholics(papist), yankees. It lost it's purpose then an even worse pile of nutbags franchised the whole thing in Pennsylvania and Indiana. Smart kid, but I think he's looking for excuses when there's more of a cultural issue going on, and a huge schooling problem(and I don't advocate vouchers). But the worst public school can produce the brightest person. |

Yeah, we all learned much fromObviously, among your other problems, you can't read. You are also blinded by your own racial hatred and you only see the world through a very tinted computer screen. You are obviously friendless where you are, as evidenced by the fact that you are begging people in NY to be your friend. |

Ooookkkaaayyy????Begging you to be my friend? That's a new one. :0) But hey, you want to play it striaght, well play straight: Crown Heights 1991: White man drives over a young black boy like he was a soda can. Black man stabs another white man in heat of moment. Bensonhurst 1986: Black man goes to buy a car. Black man beaten and tourtured by white teenagers. White teenagers given slap on wrist. Happy? I didn't start this thread for it to be like this. Like every culture, there is good and bad. So be the bigger man and drop it. Becasue you may get over on me alot. If he can get himself or keep in the smarter classes(hopefully his high school has classes separated by merit level and not mixed, that kills it) I would assume it's possible for him to stay on a somewhat winning track. And if that's the case, maybe he's wondering how to fix and better his city, but on some race basis. I've tried to theorize if I had unlimited resources and power, or even without, how to fix and make philly a viable clean city again, instead of being the worst in the nation. Which then I have nothing against that. But I've been trying to come up with an answer for that for too many years. But maybe sometimes I give some people too much credit. Speaking of which, there's a little LIFE magazine suppliment in some newspapers this week with a story on the Strawberry Mansion section of philly. Used to be mansions before the depression, now is a depressed predominately black area(in whatever houses weren't demolished yet). Something to do with horses and innercity kids. It's a good and fun hobby, but I don't know if these kids are going to go buy a farm. And if they did, some developer will just turn it into a subdivison in the next week. |

So Gavin Cato was killed deliberately by an indifferent Jew . Then 2 days later, in the heat of the moment, a group of well-meaning black citizens chase an unrelated jewish male , while screaming "KILL THE JEW" and stab him to death. Oh what the hell, he was likely guilty of something. Is that how yyou see the crown heights riots? Thank you, you make a better case about your particular sociopathy than I could. |

You forgot the Rodney King riots where they pulled the whitey out of the truck and beat him.Or Cincy where the police chased a black kid on a motorcycle for doing something, i forget what, he refused to stop, drove into a house and died. blamed the cops and said, "he's a good kid" like they always do. Yea blame the cops instead of the criminal. THERE'S your answer for what's wrong. Prevent the damn thing from happening at the start! |

I hardly believe whole blocks have for sale signs up because the person living next to them happens to be black or some other ethnic group, hispanic whatever. It's because of crime and lower-class goings on. If you OWN your house, and someone next door, on welfare is spending 200 bucks a month, a real disparity, and they're treating the place like shit, which is bringing the value of YOUR home down, there's a problem. And of course whoever is doing it doens't care, wont' listen.Just like the whole WOW center thing where all the 14 bus drivers are being assaulted now. One just has to read the letters to the editor, even the cops are running as fast as they can. And last I remembered, the Northeast was redistricted, and some suburbianite can represent the area now. But that whole arm of the city didn't leave because, as some really want to believe, some black folk moved in next door. It's deeper than that. You're more than welcome to myrter yourself for some pretend race peace cause thing and ignore the whole root problem and the reason problems itself. Other cities are integrated just fine. But you know what, when you're whole neighborhood, including the cops and teachers are being terrorized and having their homes invaded and cars broken into, go ahead and make a race issue and say it's your own fault your car got stolen because you had some racial motives. Because I dont' know a single person up there(before they fled) who didn't have this problem. This is a totally different issue now, which I could do a whole book on if i wanted(i need the money, maybe i should). |
