How is it that once the airplane returned to the gate L.E. was not in place on the PLB to greet it? The actor simply walked away from the gate and was found in a terminal restroom based on SeaTac surveillance video reviewed by said officers. ™ Stay safe and do not fly 321s on Pacific routes. |

Double failure -- should not have gotten through TSA screening without a boarding pass and should not have been able to get past the agents and onto a plane at the gate without a boarding pass.Delta uses facial recognition for boarding at some airports (including JFK) and does not look at the paper or electric boarding pass. This seems to make it easier for someone to wander onto a plane when the boarding gate agents get distracted for some reason or another. I don't know whether this technology was in use for this incident, but it almost certainly was with the stowaway to Paris a few weeks ago. |

My understanding based solely on what I read is that there is plenty of blame to go around since the concept of "layered security" clearly failed. The individual should never have set foot on the PLB in the first place through the circumvention/bypassing of the boarding verification process. That the airplane was off the gate with engines running taxiing to the runway is almost besides the point. Thankfully, I think the flight attendant(s) caught the breach or were alerted to it in time even though I realize the TSA screening probably meant there was nothing concerning on the person. No matter, the coordination between the cabin crew and flight crew and between the flight crew and Dispatch needs to be absolutely clear to ensure that L.E. fully understands the situation and is in position to meet the airplane before the passenger entry door is opened unless there is an extenuating circumstance to do so. I cannot speak for Delta per se but I have been in situations requiring the aforementioned coordination. The Captain is ultimately responsible for the aircraft and the safety of passengers and crew members and has "Emergency Authority" to deviate from regulatory guidance at all levels of oversight to ensure safety. |

(I don't count flights to Hawaii). It's not so much the safety as much as I prefer the added sense of space for such a long flight. I dread when 7-8 hour flights become normal for narrow-bodies even though I know it's coming -- hopefully at least the result is cheap enough fares that I can do an upgrade a little more often. |

Were you issued, and if so, do you wear a reflective vest while on the KPHX ramp apron tarmac call it what you will in your official capacity as a marshaler of LSG Sky Chef vehicles? I have tried for years to procure one of those vests, worn by the Russian Mafia I meant to write cleaning crew at O'Hare, that has "SCRUB LEAD" written on the back. On a couple occasions, I left the airplane between the completion of the Preflight and the start of the Before Push checklists because I saw one of those cleaners walking down the stairs on the adjacent airplane holding a mop to head over to either another piece of equipment or back to their office. Essentially, I was told in both cases that I could not have one. Those things are rarely seen and worth their weight in gold so I am going to keep on trying until I get one. I will wear the vest at work, I mean it I'll do it. |
