I seem to remember seeing a 6000-series Fishbowl reading B49 Oriental Blvd-Mackenzie St or something like that. (the B49 was technically one of my home routes when I lived in Crown Heights (between Bedford Av and Rogers Av), but I never rode it because it didn't go anywhere I wanted to go. Now if it had gone into downtown Brooklyn maybe, but otherwise, took the B41 (or the 3 or D/QJ/(M after 1973) (Q/QT0QB before 11/67) |

I'm not sure how widespread the sensitivity towards "Orientals" is, but I remember first hearing about it around 1990 or so, the reasoning being that "Oriental" is a term that the West came up with. :-| The person was also an American of Chinese descent, not sure if he was naturalized or if he was born here. |

That reminds me of guys who used to spend all day hitting pay phone coin return slots & get the occasional dime or quarter. Then there were the "stoopers", guys that would go to race tracks & stoop down & scoop up tickets tossed on the floor by folks that thought they were losers. Every now & then the stooper would find a winner. |

I guess someone could leave the 4 cents (or whatever credit in there)m although I never looked for that. Technically too, you didn't have to bring up "hundreds" of small cents vouchers either, you could put your "4 cents" voucher into a machine with an "8 cents" voucher, and then take out an "11 cents" voucher, and so forth. |

I find at the casinos that I would end up with a pocket full of change from cashing out numerous vouchers. Now I cash several vouchers at once to get a smaller amount of change or just insert the entire voucher into the next machine. Of course, this problem is moot if you stick to large denomination ($1 and up) machines. |

Even if you bring multiple vouchers into the cashout machine, you can put in multiple vouchers and then press a button when done. So in your example you would get a dime and a penny for 11 cents instead of getting 4 pennies and then a nickel and 3 pennies. So Jeff's friend got folding money instead of bagfuls of pennies. |

Within the first 6 months, it overheated (thermostat stuck in the closed position), cracked gas tank filler pipe, where the pipe met the tank & constant pre-ignition. Thats when the engine runs on (dieseling)after its shut off. I was on a first name basis with the shop folks at Roosevelt Chevrolet. With all that, it met an untimely death when a drunk driver smacked into it while parked on Northern Blvd. Total loss. That's faulty reasoning as "Asian" is also a term that the West came up with. So is the entire English language for that matter. Also many Asian country names in English are exonyms.I think that Jeff makes a good point that "Oriental" is more descriptive than Asian because Asia's a big place. Although "East Asian" is the solution here. |

Buy the time I wanted to thank him, he was in cuffs in the back of an NYPD car. Back then(late 60s early 70s) cars out of Detroit were a niche above overpriced junk. I knew many folks that swore off buying any new American car.One big reason Japanese car sales took off. Overall better quality control. Better reliability. Finally, Detroit got their act together, got the junkies off the assembly line & got quality control up to where it should be. Sales went back up. |

I 1985 I bought a new Toyota Tercel wagon. 4 speed stick, little 4 banger engine w/great mileage. But loaded, it couldn't get out of its own way. Merging onto highways was an adventure. Zero to sixty in 5 minutes so it would seem. Had it for 6 years until it rusted out big time. Something about Japanese steel being inferior to American as I found out thru other Toyota owners later on.Towards the end, once I puled up on the handbrake & the whole mounting assembly came off in my hand with the brake handle! Quarter panels, rocker panels, wheel wells all rusted thru. It still ran great, but if I was ever in a collision, it would be game over. Soon after that, Another donation to the Willets Point junkyards was made. BTW I tried to get vanity plates saying JAP-TRAP. DMV turned me down b/c JAP was considered an ethnic slur. Even back then, folks were losing their sense of humor!:) |

"What would be the point?"One point would be to avoid confrontations with the "mask police" that are out there making sure that everyone they see are wearing masks. These overzealous nitwits will get in your face (at 6 ft) and demand that you wear a mask. Thats the next problem. With each day passing, more and more folks are getting vaccinated. Thus over time less and less folks will feel that they need a mask. Maybe vaccinated people should wear a tag saying "Im vaccinated so fuck off!" |
