It's a well-worn cliche, but it's true: In more than 20 years in EMS, I very rarely unbuckled a dead driver or passenger from a seat belt after an MVA. Those who died despite wearing seat belts, were always in cars or other vehicles that were completely destroyed.N.B.: The city-bound Grand Central Parkway between 188 St. and Utopia Pkwy, was a guaranteed MVA-with-trauma location anytime after 2 AM on a Sunday morning. It got to where we would just park on the WB service road just west of the highway patrol, sit 97, and wait for the job to come to us. Those who wore seat belts were invariably far more likely to survive. It was often the unbelted rear seaters that got ejected. Oh, and yes, I wear my seat belt in a car or SUV, whether or not I'm in the rear seat. |

Seems some need the nanny state to rule every aspect of their lives. Free choice is evil. |

Last year several illegals in an uninsured vehicle were involved in a minor traffic accident near the Westbury train station. Fleeing the accident, they went around the lowered crossing gates and were hit by 2 train passing in opposite directions. The car and occupants were incinerated, leaving the taxpayers holding the bag hor several millions of dollars to replace lost railcars, damaged track, and about 200 feet of station platform. Now, not to be argumentative but there were laws against:Being in the country illegally Driving without insurance Fleeing the sceen of an accident Driving around down crossing gates The laws didn't save taxpayers anything. |

Non-citizens can get a drivers license without a social security card, etc. The move to make obtaining a drivers license on the basis of residence and driving ability was proposed by Governor Spitzer back in 2007. It has continually been blocked by the GOP-controlled State Senate. It was one of the bills passed by the last Democratic-controlled Senate. The reason NYS citizens must shoulder a disproportionate share of those injured in collisions is due to driving uninsured vehicles regardless of the driver's citizenship status. There are plenty of people with homes in NYS who register their cars out of state. They do this to escape their obligation to obtain adequate insurance. If you wish to vent your spleen, look around your neighborhood for vehicles with out of state plates that are permanent fixtures. Their owners are the ones who deserve your our disapproval. |
