I seem to remember going from K-12 in the NYC public school system, and never seeing a cop unless there was a real emergency. Police weren't assigned to schools then, and shouldn't be now. There is no reason for six-year-olds to be handcuffed.

I want to see a picture of this six-year old in handcuffs if you want to put kids in danger of a mass shooter for some insane little shit fantasy of yours.

There's no reason for 12 year olds to go around with guns or 8 year olds to get free condoms either.

The best days of school are when they had metal detecting days.

(1) Yes.
I do think police should know the laws they are enforcing. If that's (2), I can get behind it.
(3) No, but I don't like federal oversight of anything. State oversight I can get behind.
(4) I like what Colorado has done to bypass qualified immunity, if a cop violates your civil rights, they are responsible for a minimum of $25,000 in damages.
(5) No. There are lots of bad reasons why a cop might be fired - refusing to enforce an unconstitutional law, making a controversial social media post, or getting railroaded after snitching on bad cops. Going to a new department with a better culture should be an option.
(6) *Shrug* it's situational. I think the most militarized my local cops are is a single M4 rifle in case things really get heavy. Major cities might need an APC or two.
(7) Policing against the students I can get behind, but they need to be there to deter outside threats, like at this Oregon school. If we can have an armed guard in a bank to defend money, we should have an armed guard (at least) in a school to defend kids.

You could just forcibly break into the police car and try to steal all the weapons through the back window. That's a start.
Then you can "defund" the life of the police officers too. Especially if they're a little bit light in the skin.

#4 I could potentially agree with because it encourages good cops to keep bad cops in line because they don’t want to have to pay settlements.

#5 my issue is that someone terminated for reasons other than incident involving force could lead to good cops being blackballed because they didn’t share the same politics as a commanding officer,

First of all the first paragraph shows how biased the author is by repeating all the lies that "police brutality is a horrific normality and, in more ways than one, black men being shot by police has become the modern-day equivalent of lynching". And second of all the article never answers the questions of how/why police in other countries are not armed.

so they had to create an armed "special branch" . .

That's universally true, wherever the police are unarmed. The point is that the first encounter is with unarmed police. If they cannot handle the situation, then and only then is the special squad called. The idea of the unarmed first encounter is to prevent an escalation.

this youtube video is a glaring example of why we need to cut police funding and discipline cops who behave this way.

Videos like this are proof that the US is overpoliced and we need to reduce spending and hold cops like this accountable.

forgot to say "revenge" interactions need to be in Police Reform if it's serious.

Cops should be prohibited from stalking and escalating situations by following someone they simply don't like. SCOTUS ruled against it recently but based on a mountain of evidence, citizens need protection from "revenge" interactions.
