(1) Yes.I do think police should know the laws they are enforcing. If that's (2), I can get behind it. (3) No, but I don't like federal oversight of anything. State oversight I can get behind. (4) I like what Colorado has done to bypass qualified immunity, if a cop violates your civil rights, they are responsible for a minimum of $25,000 in damages. (5) No. There are lots of bad reasons why a cop might be fired - refusing to enforce an unconstitutional law, making a controversial social media post, or getting railroaded after snitching on bad cops. Going to a new department with a better culture should be an option. (6) *Shrug* it's situational. I think the most militarized my local cops are is a single M4 rifle in case things really get heavy. Major cities might need an APC or two. (7) Policing against the students I can get behind, but they need to be there to deter outside threats, like at this Oregon school. If we can have an armed guard in a bank to defend money, we should have an armed guard (at least) in a school to defend kids. |
