That's not always true. Here in Philadelphia, a chief inspector (third highest rank in PPD) allegedly groped, harassed, and sexually abused female cops under his command for years. Although the PPD was aware of it, first they allowed Holmes to retaliate against one woman who complained by siccing Internal Affairs on her. Holmes used his Immense power within the PPD to deflect and derail multiple investigations into his conduct. Eventually, he developed such a bad reputation for his behavior, that a bar in Germantown actually circulated his picture among their staff, warning them of his tendency to grope the female customers. Finally, last year, prosecutors took a huge pile of evidence to a grand jury, got an indictment, and Internal Affairs arrested him. They actually put him in a wagon and had him transported to the Roundhouse--where his office was just a few doors down from the Commissioner's--for processing just like any other perp. That was a fall so hard, cops heard it in Chestnut Hill.

The FOP, which represents all Philly police officers, regardless of rank, refused to defend him or furnish Holmes with an attorney, which is a departure from their normal practice. Even the union couldn't stomach his alleged crimes.

The FOP isn't necessarily a bona fide Union when it comes to show police departments. That is more like a fraternal organization, like the Guardians or the Emerald Society.

Nevertheless, the FOP is the collective bargaining unit for the PPD, and even they would't have it when it comes to Holmes' depravity.

"Tripped" means you are balanced and then lose your balance because of some intervening force.

He was NEVER balanced after he was shoved.

The cop is lucky the guy didn't die. Obvious criminally negligent homicide, if not manslaughter, like a guy dying after you punch him.

When you push 75 year olds, they tend to fall. A 30 year old would have done just fine in response to that shove.

Taking it to the extreme, if you put a bullet through a 95 year old man who is dying, it's not a defense to say he would have died anyway.

It's a toxic culture. If we really want to do something about this, that is the place to start. Cops pretty much socialize with other cops. They discuss cases they encounter, further reinforcing bigoted hateful ideas about populations in the community. Those attitudes are then reflected in how they approach their work. The infamous blue line IS for real.

And there's nobody to counter it, control it, correct it. Starting there will do a lot towards ending the brutality.

Protests over the sickening destruction of a decent human being like Mr Floyd should not be abated in the least. But those trouble makers who destroyed and looted business and caused so much destruction in many of our cities should be punished to the full extent of the law. What's worse is that many Black business were destroyed by mobs of hoodlums, many of whom were white. Sickening all around.

Well reviewing the circumstances, the man is clearly stepping up on the cops to block and confront them as they advance.

But the cops were charged with felony assault only because the old man was lucky enough to split his head open. Under any other circumstances he's engaging in disorderly conduct, assaulting a police officer, and several other charges.

The mood in America right now is very anti-police.

I'm betting that NYPD on video arresting someone for not social distancing will be fired for brutality. It was LES and the cop was getting in the face of a crowd recording. In other words he did what Chauvin's partner didn't.

In Buffalo the old man who stepped up on police and tried to block them would face charges under normal circumstances. But he got hurt and rides the wave of momentum.

All over America cops are looking at Chauvin and his partners and trying to figure out how the crowd could have been intimidated into moving along, which would have resulted in far less damning video and audio footage for the world to see.

The closest camera to Chauvin is about just 20 feet away. NYPD and other forces would intimidate onlookers into moving back. Had Chauvin's partners done so things would not be as bad for him.

In that scenario, yes it does. He was actively interfering with them, blocking them, and getting in the way. 30 years ago, plenty of times when I was in the subway, if people got cute and purposely
blocked me, they got the football shove. Also, when effecting an ejection from the system, you were (don't know if it still holds true) allowed to use physical force, if necessary.
