Did you know there is a pandemic going on?

Posted by Orange Blossom Special on Wed Feb 5 10:09:58 2020

The largest and most robust cities in the world are shut down. People have hoarded a months worth of food or more. It is illegal to go outside uncovered without a mask. There are shortages of masks. People are covering themselves up with plastic bags (an illegal item in New York).
The fatality and spread in a month is off the charts. They're afraid enough to build 2 mega-hospitals in 10 days per facility.

And the Demonkkkratic enemedia only cares about a bunch of neo-nazi's in Iowa, and some crazy cult lady tearing up the constitution on live television.

Wuhan Coronavirus

战疫情特别报道 30/1/20 Special report on war epidemic situation

This is outdated, we're at 25,000 now. Death tool even climbs faster than the news keeps up with.
The rate of contamination is amazing.

...the common flu kills thousands of people every year in the United States, and tens of thousands more globally. However, we don't lose our minds about this, even though the ordinary flu is much more virulent than coronavirus.

" However, we don't lose our minds about this, even though the ordinary flu is much more virulent than coronavirus."

So we shouldn't be banning all travel, and quarantining whole cities, banning cars on the roads, and dressing people up in biohazard suits because the flue is supposed to kill thousands of people PER YEAR.

You do know the difference between 3 weeks and a year right? You're not this stupid, or are you?

Y2K would have been a disaster if billions hadn't been spent in advance to address the issue.

Korea's bombs are still there.

Ebola was actually pretty bad in Africa, where lots of people live, though not a worldwide pandemic.

It's not bullshit to be concerned about coronavirus, though I agree it's extremely unlikely to be a massive disaster. But there are going to be layoffs in the US pretty soon because manufacturers here can't get parts from their suppliers in China who have shut down.

My point is, which the illiterate left isn't able to read for some reason, my point is that I don't see any panic coverage in the papers. And I've never seen a response such as this, and a graph such as this. By the time you read yesterdays reports (foreign press, not the enemedia), the numbers are outdated.

Your xenophobic democratic neighbors aren't watching what's going on in China. Especially the racist clearaspect. The scenes are highly irregular. It is not normal to lock down a popular 1st world nation, and send 10's of thousands of people to build hospitals asap. And you got jayzeebmt giving me the tired old excuse about the flu. So the Asians are either stupid as per him, or Nancy and Obama are failures for not giving the Flu any serious considerations.

You are so wrong.its the RW that won't fund research that could accelerate the process of getting this under control. It’s still early on.

Yet, this is epidemic. It’s not out in the wild on any other continent, so it really isn’t a pandemic....yet. Doesn't mean it won’t become one, a fact the trumpsters conveniently ignore (as it requires science, not alchemy). That leaves our population vulnerable until others come up with treatments and immunizations. (If people here will take them) America first lately?

When I clicked your post, I gave you the benefit of the doubt that you had a day of lucidity. instead of I get some type of conspiracy theory that there are RW'ers in China blocking research, even though it is western companies that are confident that the summer will help in getting treatment developed before the next year.

But I guess I am soo wrong, because there are no labs anywhere else in the world. My Mucinex didn't come from Brexit England or anything.

A) It was Trump that passed the right to choose law. Obama and the democrats tabled the bill for years to allow people to try experimental medications as a last result.
We have thousands of graves for this legacy which Nancy and the Squad want to bring back after repeal.

I'd worry myself to sleeplessness at the next election if I were you.

B) "If they would fund scientific research, we’d have a vaccine for this possibly by now."

I didn't know Vaccines can occur so quickly and be given to so many people under a month.
Guessing you didn't read that one about the doctor who discovered and warned about the virus in December and police paid him a visit. I wonder if the police will pay you one too.

"Then it wouldn't matter so much, just like the flu WHICH HAS A VACCINE."

Great, another vaccine that's barely 17% effective. What's the numbers this year? It couldn't have been worse and more pointless as last year.
What's the deal with all the vaccinated people always getting sick too?

A) That Obama-era law ONLY applies to drugs for terminal diseases, it’s not for something like this. That being said, some docs in Thailand (Read: NOT here) have seen results with existing retro virals. why isn't this happening here?

B)Corona viruses are known, so yes, it just may be able to develop a vaccine relatively quickly given research funding. it’s the RW that won’t fund, after all this IS science.

As to standard flu vaccine, your stats are way off. way off. Brings to mind trump approval polls. Despite crowing over some outlier, seems they really still hover a little under40%.

When did we nationalize healthcare that the Republicans are developing vaccines? Last I saw, there were tons of rich companies that are working on this currently that will charge the arm and a leg.
Since obama was around, most of them aren't even American anymore. Reverse mergers and China and Israel and such. So who are these Republicans funding? A community college?

Flags are lowered to half staff for 3 days.

Little sense of shared grief as virus deaths near 100,000

WASHINGTON — For months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the nation ached together in televised memorials, joining in a collective catharsis of uniformed salutes, bagpiped dirges and President George W. Bush declaring a national day of mourning and remembrance.
The space shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986 turned classrooms into grieving sessions, with President Reagan directly addressing the national wounds. The Japanese attack on Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor in 1941 was a day that President Franklin D. Roosevelt said would live in “infamy,” uniting the mainland to enter a world war.

Yet as the nation nears 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 — far more than all those tragic events combined or the entire Vietnam War — there is little sense this Memorial Day weekend that Americans are grieving together or uniting in a sense of purpose.

While Americans have shared undeniable hardships since March — including more than 38 million people forced to file for unemployment, and tens of millions more forced to hunker down at home to avoid the contagion — the carnage is hitting them unevenly.

“I don’t think we’re taking this in,” said David Kessler, an author of six books on grief.

“It’s easy to digest a statistic. It is not easy to digest 12 plane crashes a day,” Kessler said. “Especially when there are no visuals. We aren’t seeing 90,000 caskets. That kind of stuff would shock us. Maybe this is too big for us to comprehend.”

Excel has clearly solved the problem even on 32-bit computers - I use spreadsheets with dates later than 2038 all the time. (Besides, date 0 on Excel is 1/1/1900.)

Excel doesn’t use the Unix system for storing dates and times, so it’s irrelevant.

Excel solved the Y2.1K problem.* It correctly has February 28, 2100 followed by March 1, 2100. However it still includes an incorrect February 29, 1900 for backwards compatibility.

*The failure to implement the Gregorian system for leap years, which will not differ from the Julian system until 2100.

I'll be darned. 2/1/1900 is day 32 in Excel and 3/1/1900 is day 61. Who knew? (Well, you did, but I didn't.)

So everything in January and February 1900 is messed up. If I use the applicable format, I get "Wednesday, February 01, 1900" but it was actually a Thursday.

Yes. So day 0 in Excel (and its predecessor, from which it got the system, Lotus 1-2-3) would be 12/31/1899. Except that is based on the incorrect assumption that there was a 2/29/1900. So in fact, Excel day serial numbers for real dates (3/1/1900 on) really give elapsed days since 12/30/1899.

This isn’t a “bug.” Excel purposely includes this error for backwards compatibility. Microsoft has a Knowledge Base article about it. They decided that the advantages of keeping this outweighs the disadvantages.

I was thinking WTF? Excel only goes back to 1/1/1900, so how much backwards compatibility does that provide? But OK, it provides compatibility with Lotus 1-2-3. It's all their fault.

I am flabbergasted Lotus and Excel didn't allow dates in the 19th century. At the time Lotus was developed (and even Excel), plenty of people were still alive who were born before 1900. I wasn't using spreadsheets with date of birth data then, but it must have been an awful inconvenience for users.

LibreOffice Calc handles dates before Dec 30, 1899 as negative integers. I presume Excel does the same. It appears that LibreOffice uses the Roman Catholic calendar. The conversion between Julian and Gregorian calendars is the 1 day transition between 4 Oct 1582 to 15 Oct 1582. The conversion in colonial America was 2 Sep 1752 to 14 Sep 1752. There is a 3 Sep 1752 in LibreOffice Calc.

In the SAS programming language, which has been around since 1970, and still widely used, the earliest valid date January 1, 1582 and last valid date is December 21, 20000.

Thank you for mentioning LibreOffice Calc . I just downloaded it on my computer and will start using it to see how it works out.

My Win 7 desktop computer, which I have parked off to the side, using it as a backup, is 11 years old, has Office 2003, and everything has always worked fine, though it has gotten slow. No reinstalling of anything.

My Win 10 desktop computer is 5 months old, works fine, very fast EXCEPT Office Home & Student 2019 has now been reinstalled twice. At 2 random times, it simply failed to load when prompted and did not work at all, which has Excel, Word, and PPT. Good thing I have a back up computer. I have no idea why, as a user I don't care why, and can only conclude it yet another one of Microsoft's poorly tested, unstable hunks of shit.

Lotus 1-2-3 was big in the 1980's and 90's. I wish it were still relevant.

Not entirely related, but when I worked for the USC (Southern California) Bookstore, the main software we used was called RATEX. The RATEX date handling was set up counting from January 1, 1968, which was assigned the value 1. All subsequent dates continued from that day. The great thing was that there were no Y2K issues with this system (I left the bookstore in June 1998 for my current job in South Florida, but we had already started Y2K mitigation before I left). The only issue was when we reached day #10000. The system produced weekly sales reports (Sunday-Saturday, IIRC), using the date system, so for example starting on a Sunday (say day# 9783) through Saturday (day #9789) (I just picked those numbers out of thin air, no idea if those really were a Sunday and Saturday respectively. Those of you with "high scores", feel free to calculate) :) Well, day 10000 occured mid-week, the problem was, the day # field was only 4 bytes. So we went from say 9997 to 0003, so the report was messed up. I forget exactly how, but I was able to put together 2 reports, one with the 999* numbers, and another with the 000* numbers, and I just told the department managers to combine the totals. I informed the store director of the issue, I don't know if he contacted the programmer to fix it, and not long after, I left, so it was no longer my problem. 10,000 days is like 27 years and change, I've been gone for 22 years, so it will be awhile before the problem pops up again if they didn't increase the size of the field. Or for all I know, they may have an entirely new software system.

January 1, 1582 sounds like an odd choice. Are you sure you don't mean October 15? If 1/1/1582 is correct, how does it handle October of that year, which is when the Gregorian calendar was inaugurated.

I don't know their rationale.

Excel does. The 19th century is negative.

The backwards compatibility is because the date is a number of days from 12/31/1899, any change would cause dates in all new spreadsheets to be off by one. The other option, changing the epoch to 12/30/1899 would have the same issue with 19th century dates.

Is there a October 13, 1582? The Roman Catholic calendar skipped from October 3 to October 14 in 1582.

Is there a October 13, 1582?

Depends where you were. Countries that were not Roman Catholic remained on the Julian calendar.

This link shows when the change to Gregorian was made by area.

Here's a trivia question. If you were to look at George Washington's family bible, what would be the date that recorded his birth?

Does this come up often in real life or is this just more pseudo-intellectual masturbation?

You just answered in your prior post that 11 days were omitted. Of course, one may have to be an old fogy to remember that Washington's birthday used to be celebrated on 2/22.

I presume Excel does the same.

No, if I enter -5000 into Excel, and then format as a date, I get a string of # signs, no matter how wide I make the column.

I've actually come across that problem in real life at work. Someone must have mistyped a DOB as 18xx instead 19xx as input into a system that could tolerate that (probably Cobol on an IBM mainframe), and then when the data was imported into Excel, formulas referencing that cell went nuts.

I should ask someone who was an actuary in the 1980s how they handled DOBs in the 19th century. I know my company used to use Lotus until the mid-90s. Pension liabilities for retirees would not have been calculated correctly in 1985 if you had just defaulted every 19th century birth to 1/1/1900.

Excel easily shows that 10,000 days after 1/1/19668 is Friday, 5/19/1995. So you were there for 2-3 years after the problem arose.
