I stand corrected, though it makes clear the team was disbanded and its members reassigned, making it possible to reconstitute in the case of an actual pandemic. Trump did create the Coronavirus Task Force (which CNN's only complaint about was that it was too white, indicating they had no other negative characteristics such as lack of pertinent knowledge or experience to attack it on) by January 30th.My thought is: do we need a standing pandemic response team, or is simply keeping track of those capable of the job and tapping them when necessary sufficient? Do we have a standing volcano or earthquake response team, or do we gather experts when a problem arises? Both of those are more common than a pandemic, which last occurred in the 1950s and optimism bias has set in for longer on that topic than the others. |

I've already stated - without a national emergency declaration, nothing would have been done in time, because of all the red tape the CDC and FDA have erected to justify their existence. The slow, painful response was entirely legal and to the letter of established regulations, which is why I'm slowly realizing no one will be fired over the response time. The CDC created a flowchart that insured no one would actually get tested unless they both had all symptoms *and* known contact with a positive person. The big hole was people who had visited China were excluded on that testing flowchart even if they had symptoms. IMO Another agency such as the NSC telling the CDC and FDA what to do would be met with the same incompetent-but-legal pushback the Coronavirus team was. |

But they don't have the force or the perspective to coordinate across departments. Since pandemics tend to be global problems which can affect the country as a whole, like nuclear proliferation, it stands to reason that the organization for dealing with it is located higher up the hierarchy and can encompass many departments. By comparison, volcanoes and earthquakes tend to be local disasters which typically don't spread across the country. Measures for dealing with both have been around for many decades. |
