It's different than Watergate.In Watergate, a crime was definitely committed. And with time, it became clear that a cover-up was launched to make it look like the criminals had nothing to do with the Republicans. Nixon's defense was that the cover-up either didn't happen, or if it did happen, it was done by underlings and not with his consent. Once he was proven to be lying about that, he was out. In contrast, Trump does not in the least deny that he asked the Ukrainians (and the Chinese) for help in getting dirt on the Bidens. His defense is that it wasn't a crime and in fact was in the national interest, and even if it was illegal it doesn't warrant removal from office. So with Trump, the facts aren't really in dispute. What Trump did is all out in the open. The issue is the subjective one of whether what he did was illegal or bad, and how illegal and bad. |
