Detailed Philadelphia Inquirer story.When the friend showed up, he informed the police officers that the two Black men were waiting for him, that they were commercial real estate agents, and that they were, in fact, supposed to do a business meeting with him. The cops insisted it was too late for the trio to meet somewhere else, and hauled the two Black patrons off to the police station. They told the friend the pair had been "asked to leave", but refused, therefore committing the crime of "defiant trespass", which in Pennsylvania is a printable offense. Numerous other patrons wondered aloud why the two men would have been "asked to leave", when they were merely sitting calmly, awaiting their friend's arrival. Other witnesses say no barista or other Starbucks employee approached either man, and that the barissta blindly called the police without ever speaking to them, but this, of course, is in dispute. What is NOT in dispute on the video, is that the pair were, in fact, waiting quietly for the other party to arrive, as tens of thousands of Starbucks customers do daily, without incident. Why they were singled out for arrest is an open question, especially since they were both later released without charges of any kind. I myself have been in this Center City Starbucks a few times (it's at 18th and Spruce, near the Gayborhood), and I've seen many (white) patrons come in, sit down without ordering anything, and wait for their companions without anyone saying a word, much less calling the police. The usual suspects here aside, racism is more real in America today, than at any time since the Civil Rights era. Waiting While Black is now part of the long, long lost of things people of color cannot do without either getting arrested or shot. |

More, from ABC6:Outrage is mounting after two men were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks, and an eyewitness said a manager escalated the situation by calling police instead of asking the men to buy something or leave. Lauren, who asked that her last name not be used, shot video of the two men being arrested at the Starbucks just before 5 p.m. on April 12. She said the incident began after the men asked to use the bathroom and were told that it was only available for paying customers, which Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross later confirmed. After the men had been "quietly hanging out, chatting and waiting for their friend," she said officers entered the restaurant and asked the two men to leave, saying that they would be trespassing if they did not leave. "The two young men politely asked why they were being told to leave and were not given a reason other than the manager wanted them to leave," she told ABC in an email. The men told the officer that they were waiting for a friend to arrive and offered to call that friend to prove that they had legitimate business at the restaurant, she said. At that point, she said several officers began to move tables and chairs around the two men and take them into custody. The friend for whom the men were waiting then arrived and attempted to intervene, but police told him the men "were not paying customers and thus were trespassing," Lauren recalled. "The two men stayed calm and did not raise their voices once. Everyone else in the Starbucks, however, was appalled," she added. Lauren said another woman had entered the Starbucks minutes before the men were arrested and was given the bathroom code without having to buy anything and that another person in the restaurant at the time of the incident "announced that she had been sitting at Starbucks for the past couple of hours without buying anything." "These men were discriminated against and unjustly detained. Being a person of privilege, it's hard to believe things like this still happen in 2018," Lauren told ABC. "Sometimes you don't fully believe it until you see it with your own eyes." The Philadelphia Police Department has launched an internal investigation into the incident, and Commissioner Richard Ross has said the officers had legal standing to arrest the men because Starbucks, the property owner, had asked to have them removed from their private property. The men were eventually released from police custody, and the district attorney's office declined to press charges due to a "lack of evidence that a crime was committed." Starbucks has since released a statement apologizing to the two men, adding that they are "disappointed this led to an arrest" and pledging to review their policies "to ensure these types of situations never happen in any of our stores." |

Truly spoken like a person who knows, to an absolute certainty, that he will never, ever find himself in a dangerous or awkward situation because of his color, sexual orientation, or both. What you are saying is that the cops who responded to the Starbucks, should base all their information on what cane over their radio, not what they find at the scene. Numerous witnesses told the cops the men weren't doing anything wrong. In fact, one (white) woman was quoted by ABC6 as saying she'd been in that sane Starbucks for "the past two hours without buying anything", but no one called the cops on her.As for me playing the "rectum" card (was that really an autocorrect?), I am just aware that you and I live in vastly different worlds, with different sets of societal rules, and different levels of social status. This is something you will never understand, because, again, you will never go through the kind of experience these two young men just did. You'll never know the pain of being considered "deviant" or "socially unacceptable" because of who you're attracted to. (Being gay cost me six of my teeth, for the "offense" of daring to wear my Pride T-shirt all the way home from the parade. I made it exactly three blocks from the subway, before I was attacked.) You'll never know what it means to genuinely, truly fear for your life, when pulled over for the most minor of infractions (or none at all--you just "fit the description", "look out of place", or are "driving too nice a car"), and the cops are already fingering their guns. Racism. for all your claims that people like me play the race/gay/other card, is an American institution. Incidents like the one at Starbucks (and worse) happen every day in this country. This particular episode was so very blatant, that even the white patrons who witnessed it were plainly shocked. That, sir, is cold, stark reality. |

People get arrested for "no reason" all the time in America. See Abner Louima, for starters. Justin Volpe arrested him for assaulting a cop--except that Louima wasn't even there when it happened. Volpe found a convenient Black face, and locked him up, confident the system would take him at his word. Only an alert nurse at Coney Island Hospital made Volpe's scheme unravel.Then, there are (Black) people who get locked up, whose only charge is "resisting arrest". The cops aren't even imaginative enough to concoct an underlying offense! |

My own idea for that actual store, is one protester comes in alone, sits down without ordering, "waiting for a friend". Then, his "friends" start arriving in ones and twos, also "waiting" for other "friends", without ordering until the store is full.Then the real sit-in begins. That's how nonviolent direct action works. |

The bottom line is that the police were called at the bequest of Starbucks and they removed the people from the premises. People make the police the bad guys and all these situations, yet if they went there and didn't take any action, they would be the bad guys and get complaints from Starbucks for not doing their job. |
