So look on the bright side, Colin. You'll still be able to sit through the National Anthem, unnoticed, in the stands, and no one will even care.

He'll go to Chicago. They got romped last night. Cutler should be cut.

Either way Colin will get more chances in the NFL.

It's cool to see 98% of the players did not join him and see that he was promoting himself, not awareness to injustice.

Bye Bye NFL Viewership?

Are National Anthem Protests Costing NFL Viewership?

By Christy Strawser
September 20, 2016 10:46 AM
James Olson, a Sports Illustrated subscriber since fourth grade, watches action-packed NFL games on TV to escape from the endless round of political bickering playing out on other channels.

But with more national anthem protests cropping up, he feels like politics has taken over his favorite sport, too. So he’s tuning out.

“I want to say to these guys ‘If you weren’t playing in the NFL, you would be working at McDonalds. I think people have had it,” said, Olson, a Birmingham, Mich., resident.

He’s not alone.

The NFL opener, a Super Bowl rematch between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers, brought 25.2 million viewers — which is an astonishing number of eyeballs. “For comparison, The Walking Dead averages around 14 million live viewers as TV’s most-watched show,” Forbes wrote.

But that’s down 8 percent from 2015 and 6 percent from 2014. Sunday’s numbers, Forbes added, were down 13 percent from last year.

“This also marked the lowest overnight season-opening rating in seven years,” Forbes found.

In a hot and heavy political season with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton lobbing verbal bombs at each other seemingly all day, every day, while the media breathlessly follows along, it’s just too much, Olson said.

“Sports used to not be a stage for this, and now it is, so I’m turning it off,” he said. “I refused to watch the Chicago-Philadelphia game because they were going to protest …You start to figure out you can get along without football, there are other things out there I can do.”

He spent his Sunday, instead, watching part of a soccer game, spending time outside, and then working out.

The #boycottNFL hashtag on Twitter has hundreds of participants who are urging others to send a message to NFL owners and Roger Goodell by sitting out games, turning off the TV and refusing to buy merchandise.

“We’re also pissed that the owners aren’t doing anything, that the coaches aren’t doing anything and the coaches aren’t doing anything,” Olson said. “You can do this on our own time. Rent a stage somewhere and see if you can get a crowd of 70,000 people.”

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started the wave when he pointedly kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality. Other NFL players later joined his peaceful demonstration.

The players have plenty of support. A high school team in Seattle followed Kaepernick’s lead.

“We were talking about things that were happening, taking place in society, and it went from the young men talking about the social injustice that they face on a day to day basis from coaches sharing their stories… And through our conversation, the players decided to do this. To make this movement,” the coach told The Daily Beast.

And here’s the other side: “The owners should force them not to use the NFL as a stage for their political beliefs,” Olson said. “Once this whole thing starts, it was like ‘you know what, you’re a moron. What is wrong with you?’” Olson said.

NFL viewership will drop.

Not just the politics, but the generation does not have the attention span to watch games.

And there's less participation than ever in the sport.

And the Mets won the World Series after having one of the all-time great seasons :)

Even better for me, living in Southern California at that time, the L. A. Dodgers had a terrible season, finishing 1/2 game above last place (only because they had a game rained out (on the road I guess, certainly not in L. A.) and therefore lost one fewer game than the last place team in the NL West (San Diego?) This despite a 20 game winning season by one of the few Dodgers I liked, Fernando Valenzuela.

I talked shit from late April through late October to the Dodger fans at work, it was great! (Alas, they got their revenge 2 years later. People in LA are fucking vindictive) >:(

"The gambling has a chokehold on so many people it's become a Sunday industry. "

Agreed. But thats nothing new. Just about every gin mill in NYC have box pools for at least one NFL game per week at various prices per box. Most of the clientele in those establishments are blue collar working class types where a few bucks invested could amount to a few hundred dollar tax free payoff. Playoff & Super bowl pool boxes are on sale now in some places. For example, K of C halls have box pools with some pools having waiting lists to get in. With some pools, the wait takes years to get a box.
Each pool has various payout scenerios.
I've seen box pools that sell boxes for up to $10 thou a box. Game day...what a great time to pull off a stick up.
Bottom line, billions of $$$ in NFL (illegal) action is bet every season.

I wonder how much $$$ is bet in Las Vagas sports book legal action?

If the NFL fell, all they would do is switch leagues, because someone will continue to play football. Maybe college ball would become bigger. Maybe they would switch to (gasp) CFL or rugby, or any of the other alternate forms of "American football" as it's known outside our borders.

Half of Americans oppose Kaepernick "protest": poll

fiogf49gjkf0d
That is Yahoo's headline, not mine.

Yahoo poll: Half of Americans oppose Kaepernick's protest

Jay Busbee
Sep 19, 2016, 11:41 AM
A new Yahoo Sports/YouGov survey indicates that Americans remain deeply divided about the ongoing national anthem protests in the NFL, with 44 percent of fans claiming they would actually stop watching the NFL if the protests continue.

San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick began refusing to stand during the national anthem in the preseason, citing what he termed a longstanding pattern of racially motivated police abuse of minorities. In the season’s first week, players from at least six other teams joined in the protest, taking knees and raising fists during the anthem in signs of solidarity.

The survey of 1,128 Americans, conducted on Sept. 13 and 14, found stark differences in perception of the protests among racial and age lines.

Overall, 47 percent of Americans oppose Kaepernick’s protest, with 32 percent in support and the remaining 21 percent either neutral or declining to offer an opinion. Respondents under the age of 34 are divided, with 39 percent supporting Kaepernick and 30 percent opposing him, while 65 percent of Americans over the age of 55 oppose the protest.

From a racial perspective, only 24 percent of whites supported Kaepernick’s protest, while 63 percent of black Americans supported his action. Hispanic Americans fell short of the midpoint at 39 percent.

The form of Kaepernick’s protest, during the national anthem, drew criticism as well; three in five Americans wished that Kaepernick had chosen a different method or forum for his protest. Kaepernick drew criticism on the contention that his protest disrespected the military and, on Sept. 11, the memory of those lost during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Kaepernick has sought to draw very specific lines around the extent of his protest. It’s worth noting, however, that had Kaepernick chosen another forum, it’s unlikely he would have achieved anywhere near as much attention for his cause.

Americans are split right down the middle on whether the NFL should permit protests at all, with 42 percent saying the NFL should crack down on protests, and another 42 percent saying the NFL should allow any form of protest to continue.

Still, the protests are having an impact on fans’ beliefs. Nearly half of all NFL fans, 44 percent, claim they would stop watching football if protests continued. It’s a powerful statement, one that cannot in any way be verified or quantified unless ratings were to drop by half … which, considering the nation’s ongoing love affair with football, is a highly dubious prospect at best.

The bottom line remains, however: at least 44 percent of Americans want their football to be about football … or, if it gets political, only about the kind of protests with which they agree.
