"Kaepernick Effect" causing low NFL ratings

Colin Kaepernick bringing dialogue and low NFL ratings

Steve Rivera
Oct 4, 2016, 2:46 PM
The latest of the Colin Kaepernick effect was felt across the football landscape this weekend. Beginning with high school football games, to members of the East Carolina Marching Band refusing to play the National Anthem, the “Kaepernick effect” is far reaching and exposing layers to our national season of discontent and discourse.

It’s also having an effect on perennial ratings darling, the National Football League.

#hashtagBoycottNFL is working, and media watchers, ad people, and the folks at Forbes.com are beginning to talk about a trend likely not to change anytime soon.

Regardless of your personal views or your politics, the conventional wisdom that the “too big to fail” NFL may find itself at a crossroads it can’t ignore or placate much longer.

Its also part of reason why Trump is still a contender.

I watched gamed this weekend but if Nielsen ever calls I'd lie and say I watched something else.

Ratings are also down because Manning retired, Brady was suspended, and there are few marquis QBs to draw ratings.

But I agree that the NFL is too political. Blacks make e everything political. Look at ESPN.

Last year Gronkowski did a cruise. Video of drunk Gronk and others went viral.

Some blacks on ESPN made a racial issue out of it. So I never watched ESPN again.

Maybe it's white SJWs who script the segments. I don't know. Most blacks in everyday life don't seem so racial or political.

I am not surprised. And I know it's harsh, but I'm going to echo the statements said about it: when you're paid to be there, you're a performer. You *can't* do what you want - you have no more rights than an actor would on stage/screen. Play your part.

Whenever I wasn't feeling patriotic at school I'd just not say the pledge of allegiance. But I wasn't stupid enough to be visible about it!

Actually, it all depends what your contract says. But I agree the employer has a right to insist on a "no political statements" clause in the contract. No prayer either, for that matter.

Monday Night Football overall ratings down 19 percent

NFL's 'Monday Night Football' Keeps Dropping In Ratings

Brandon Katz, contributor
Oct 4, 2016 @ 02:01 PM
There’s no denying that the numerous #BoycottNFL online campaigns and fan outrage aimed at the National Anthem protests in the NFL have taken a toll in terms of viewership.

Additionally, cord-cutting continues to eat into traditional TV’s ratings at an alarming rate.

But could there be something else at play?

We’re barely a year removed from the NFL setting all-time records in viewership, yet now the league is on pace for its lowest ratings in years. That’s a sharp and unexpectedly sudden turn.

Given the politicized controversies and the variety of streaming options this year, have we reached a cumulative point of football fatigue? The numbers suggest so.

Last night’s Monday Night Football matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants drew a 9.1 overnight rating, an 8% drop from last year’s comparable Week 4 game between the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks. The New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs game in 2014 earned a 9.6 rating.

While the number of streaming viewers has increased — last night’s game attracted 262,000 average minute viewers on digital platforms, a 23% increase from last year — total viewership is still trending downward. Last week’s Monday Night Football game unsurprisingly got clobbered in the ratings thanks to the presidential debate. That game drew a 5.7 overnight rating, the lowest in MNF history.

Overall, MNF’s ratings are down a whopping 19% this year, according to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch.

Now that the numbers have come in for last night’s game, we can safely label the NFL’s ratings problems as a larger trend. The question now becomes how does the NFL fix the problem?

fiogf49gjkf0d
There are other reasons besides Kaepernick, although he certainly has not helped. One MNF was going up against a Presidential Debate. Other games have not involved evenly matched teams. Finally, the announcing. John Gruden has a lot of knowledge, but that does not translate into announcing skills. When he is openly rooting for one of the teams (for example, in this week's Giants/Vikings game he stated that he hoped the Vikings K would make a FG) it turns off audiences. On a national broadcast, the announcers should not be so overt in rooting for one of the teams.

fiogf49gjkf0d
Yup.

MNF had not been the flagship for years. It's only going to get worse.

NFL ratings should drop without Manning, Marshawn Lynch, plus Brady missing beginning of season.

Antics of Odell Beckham don't help.

Cam Newton lost so much of his sizzle. Aaron Rodgers seems past his prime.

Now the NFL will start its Breast Cancer campaign which is more about marketing and PR than the issue itself.

NFL rules have made the game tedious. I've already seen several 1st and 30+ situations because of back to back to back penalties. The game has lost spontaneity. Add to that the injury protocols and the political subdramas and I find myself switching back and forth between the game and James Bond reruns on cable.

Good post.
In my opinion the quality of the product had declined. There are many variables included such as the rules and the over analysis of every play. The players may be bigger, stronger, etc but that hasn't made for better football players.
MNF was an institution when I was younger. Now I almost forget that it's on and I almost never watch it.

NFL downplays disrespect for National Anthem, instead blames other factors for ratings drop

NFL Blames 'Confluence of Events' for Ratings Declines

October 07, 2016, 11:55:00 AM EDT
The National Football League has sent a memo to team owners seeking to ease concerns about the ratings decline that has hit football this fall.

Through the first four weeks of the season, NFL viewership has declined 11%, and among the crucial adults 18-49 demographic that advertisers covet, ratings are down 12%.

"While our partners, like us, would have liked to see higher ratings, they remain confident in the NFL and unconcerned about a long-term issue," the letter from NFL senior executives Brian Rolapp and Howard Katz said, adding that over the last 15 years, ratings viewership has grown 27% and that football "continues to be far and away the most powerful programming on television and the best place for brands and advertisers."

As for a potential backlash by some viewers angered at players not standing for the national anthem to protest of police brutality, the NFL said it sees no evidence to that being a factor in declining ratings: "In fact, our own data shows that the perception of the NFL and its players is actually up in 2016."

The NFL said it was issuing the memo to all the teams in response to media inquiries about the decline in ratings. Long seen as invincible against the trends and changing media habits that have negatively affected other programming, network executives and advertisers have been scrambling to figure out if this is a short-term blip because of political news or the start of a long-term trend.

Not everyone is convinced that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are solely to blame. Some industry analysts note that as the NFL continues to place product on more digital platforms, a negative hit to the broadcast partners is more likely. Others cite that the NFL may have hit saturation level with games on all day Sunday, as well as a Monday and Thursday game.

In addition to the election coverage and some fans angered at the protests, another factor NFL media chief Brian Rolapp cited i n a Wall Street Journal interview was the absence of some marquee players due to injury and retirement, as another possible cause of the lower ratings.

Interestingly, ratings for college football have been up this season.
