This Morning, My Phone Rang...............
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Wed Feb 3 16:52:53 2016 fiogf49gjkf0d .........and it was my sister-in-law. She never calls me, only my brother. You can hear it in her voice, something very bad took place. My brother had a bad left knee that was bone on bone. Perhaps his knee gave way ? She stated that my brother had a very bad accident in their home yesterday. Yesterday, about noon, my sister-in-law heard a thud in the basement. It seems mmy brother fell down the stairs and at the bottom, he was in a pool of blood. My brother was on Cumadin, so that didn't help matters. After calling EMS, he was airlifted to the Baltimore Trauma Center where he is on life support. He has no brain stem activity and his pupils are dilated. He is on a ventilator, keeping him barely alive. I asked what the prognosis is and she said there is no prognosis. A few hours ago, she left for Baltimore to confer with doctors and I believe that she may decide to remove him from life support and he can join my mom and dad in Heaven. I am very upset with a feeling in my gut that won't go away. I am in a state of shock, and when the shock wears off, this all will hit me very hard. I had no other brothers or sisters, it was our small family of four, two sons of a WW II veteran and postal worker and homemaker mom. All born and raised in Brooklyn, we were a close family all brought up as church going and law abiding. Right now, I'm scared, really scared. Am I next ? I feel so empty and lost. I guess time heals all wounds. This may take some time. Forgive me if I don't answer any posts right away. I have some phone calls to make. Your condolences are very much apprecaited. You have been around these boards for so long that it feels like I know you, even though we have never met. I wish the greatest strength for you and your sister-in-law in the days ahead. Nobody really knows if their time is coming, so don't let yourself dwell on it. Keep on living life the way it seems like you have been doing. Enjoy the things that make you happy and be good to others. You are one of the truly good guys around here, and I'm sure that I can speak for most of the gang around here when I say that while we may not be blood relatives you will always be family to the SubChatters. While I hope things turn out well, with regards to your fears- Each of my grandparents had one sibling. Each either outlived or was outlived by their sibling by 1-4 decades.

For the moment, you need to help your sister-in-law get through this as well as yourself. You know me, I won't blow smoke up your butt. You'll want to get down there and spend the last bit of time with him that you can. It will hit like a ton of bricks, there's no avoiding that, and there's nothing wrong with you as you deal with it. We're praying for both of you, and if you need anything, just let us know. As to your own reality, life is a gift. No one gets out alive. Therefore once you've gotten past this, you'll want to enjoy every moment because it always could be the last. And you've got plenty of time yourself to keep on keeping on, brother ... :)

Yesterday, by way of LIRR and Amtrak, I traveled down to Baltimore to see my brother in Shock Trauma hospital. The doctors performed many tests and confirmed the worst, and he was indeed pronounced brain dead. As of this writing, he was taken off life support a silently passed away. As an organ donor, his wish was to donate his vital organs for those in need to save their lives. And now it's over. I said goodbye to my last family member from a family with much love and togetherness. Yes, I'm in a state of shock, but what concerns me is when the shock wears off and this will all hit home. They say time heals all wounds. In this case, time may move very slow. I'll survive this, with all remaining relatives and friends. Thank you for your sincere thoughts and words, Bill Newkirk

She was a very simple, yet very good woman. I promised myself not to get angry at God, or anyone else. Don't hold back the tears and, if possible, try to get closer to the rest of our family and in-laws. Grief should never be shouldered alone! Your brother sounds like he was a good soul, so don't hesitate to pray to him, as well as to God. A Polish mystic once said that the dead can hear our prayers- I believe it, Bill!
