Why the unemployment rate is dropping |
|
Posted by Dave on Sun Jul 5 07:42:02 2015 The unemployment rate didn't fall in June because more people were hired. The rate fell solely because the number of people who had become dispirited and stopped looking for work far exceeded the number who found jobs. The percentage of Americans in the workforce - defined as those who either have a job or are actively seeking one - dropped to 62.6 percent, a 38-year low, from 62.9 percent. (The figure was 66 percent when the recession began in 2007.) Fewer job holders typically mean weaker growth for the economy. The growth of the labor force slowed to just 0.3 percent in 2014, compared with 1.1 percent in 2007. U.S. job market just isn't what it used to be. |

Actually the article you linked listed a number of other factors. As the vast baby boomer generation retires and lives longer they will not be considered in the workforce even if they are still able to work. For example, chicagomotorman is not considered in the workforce although he is quite capable of working. Also younger generations are realizing that many careers require more than a college degree so rather than entering the workforce at 22-23 they are now closer to 25-30 |

Don't forget that the underemployed play a large role in reducing the official numbers. If you have a college degree and you work part time for minimum wage, you're still counted as "employed." Since most of the jobs added to the economy over the last few years have been minimum wage, part time, or both, I'd suspect that this skews the numbers considerably. |

And CMM, for example, had the option to continue working. He would have earned more money and been able to spend more and create jobs, but no, he chose not to. No.The labor force participation rate is the percentage of working-age persons in an economy who either are employed or are unemployed but looking for a job. Typically "working-age persons" is defined as people between the ages of 16-64. People in those age groups who are not counted as participating in the labor force are typically students, homemakers, and persons under the age of 64 who are retired. |

No, the U-3 is commonly used as unemployment and the BLS has that at 5.3%. U-6 is not commonly used, and introducing it at this point only serves to confuse the issue.Of course as soon as we get a Republican president, if ever, all this talk of U-6 unemployment rates and total labor force participation rates will disappear in a haze of intellectual dishonesty and willful ignorance. Then you fools will start trotting out the U-1 rate to show how great a job President Paul is doing. |

U-6 or some other measure of all those not employed, including those not looking, is a valid item for consideration as long as it is considered with care. One needs to ask, why are so many people not looking for work?To the extent that they are like CMM and have chosen not to bother, that's fine, even if slightly unfortunate. The country would be better off if CMM were still earning and spending more money. But to the extent that they have gotten so discouraged they don't bother to look any more, it's worse. Not that we ever get any serious examination of this issue from cosnervatives. |

U-6 or some other measure of all those not employed, including those not looking, is a valid item for consideration as long as it is considered with care. That's true, but IMHO this is the critical part of what you wrote: Not that we ever get any serious examination of this issue from conservatives. You won't get a serious examination of the driving forces behind various employment statistics because nothing could be further from their interest. The partisan use of the U-6 unemployment rate is purely driven by finding a statistic that makes the recovery from the Bush recession look less successful than it's actually been. We never heard anything about the U-6 rate prior to 2009, and we won't hear anything about it from those sources after a Republican president is elected. Just look at the ignorant abuse of the labor participation rate, to the point where one fool is now claiming the reciprocal of that is the "true" unemployment rate. They're desperate for anything to claim the Obama administration hasn't cleaned up Dubya's mess, and that extends to using statistics in the most dishonest manner possible. |
