U-6 or some other measure of all those not employed, including those not looking, is a valid item for consideration as long as it is considered with care.

That's true, but IMHO this is the critical part of what you wrote:

You won't get a serious examination of the driving forces behind various employment statistics because nothing could be further from their interest. The partisan use of the U-6 unemployment rate is purely driven by finding a statistic that makes the recovery from the Bush recession look less successful than it's actually been. We never heard anything about the U-6 rate prior to 2009, and we won't hear anything about it from those sources after a Republican president is elected. Just look at the ignorant abuse of the labor participation rate, to the point where one fool is now claiming the reciprocal of that is the "true" unemployment rate. They're desperate for anything to claim the Obama administration hasn't cleaned up Dubya's mess, and that extends to using statistics in the most dishonest manner possible.
