Meanwhile, hockey fans prefer that every combination of two teams meet a minimum of twice every season (once in each team's arena), regardless of distance or division. They were very upset with the old (though recent) arrangement of going to the other conference's arenas only once every three years and seeing the division rivals all the time. |

The NY in both teams names refers to the city, not the state.of NY. East Rutherford is just a part of metro NY as "Babylon" is. The only differnce between the Bills playing in Orchard Park, of the Cowboys in Arlington is the NY City border borders another state. |

Clearly they should be the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area Jets/Giants.The Jets fans can barely manage to spell the four lousy letters in their team's name, it'd be fun to see how many of them would make it through NYCMSA. |

My point is that in football the system doesn't have to be the way it is. It isn't necessary to play everyone in your division twice every season. If they reduced it to once, then you have 13 games for the other 28 teams (32 minus 3 minus 1 for yourself). If you play an extra game per season, you can see every team in the NFL every other year. . .if desired. An extra game per season could also make tiebreakers less arbitrary.Yes hockey is more games and two fewer teams, but there's still discretion on how to break down the schedule. . .less traveling and more rivalry games? or the opposite? |

The idea of each team playing its division rivals twice dates back to the first fixed NFL schedule in 1937. It also makes sense as teams are primarily competing against their division rivals for playoff access. Another useful feature of the current NFL scheduling system is that of the 16 games each team plays, 2 are against another team in the division, and 12 of the other 14 are against identical opponents in identical number. Intra-divisional tiebreaks are thus very fair. |

Not to mention the 2 different games are against teams that finished the same place in the division as you. Assuming that a division is not like the NFC South where the division winner seems to rotate every year you do not have one team playing the top two teams from a division as their different opponent and the other playing the bottom two teams from the year before. For example, next year there is a big difference between playing Indy/Houston versus Jacksonville/Tennessee. Another plus to playing intra-divisional match-ups twice is that you play everyone once at home and once on the road so you do not have a situation where one of the two teams fighting for one spot got 2 at home and the other only 1 |

If the City of New York was never changed from it's former name of New Amsterdam, and New York State had that change, it would be clearer, as the New York (City) Jets or Giants would be the New Amsterdam Jets or Giants, who play in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It's no different than the Buffalo Bills playing in Orchard Park, or the Dallas Cowboys playing in Arlington.In fact those are further from the center of their respective cities than the New York Giants/Jets are from their namesake city, the only difference being the New York City border also borders a state border. If the Jets or Giants played in Babylon, New York, for example, they would be just as outside of their namesake city as they are now. The state name has nothing to do with either of these team's names, they are the New York CITY Jets and Giants, not the New York State Jets/Giants. |
