The idea of each team playing its division rivals twice dates back to the first fixed NFL schedule in 1937. It also makes sense as teams are primarily competing against their division rivals for playoff access. Another useful feature of the current NFL scheduling system is that of the 16 games each team plays, 2 are against another team in the division, and 12 of the other 14 are against identical opponents in identical number. Intra-divisional tiebreaks are thus very fair. |
