Incidentally, they also paid something like $0.15 per signup with absolutely no verification that the signups are legitimate, so I made a small but respectable amount of money signing up before they caught on. |

If Fox says the sky is blue, you need to double check, but CNN can generally be trusted to get the most basic facts right; they generally limit themselves to false equivalences where they pretend a right wing liar is just as qualified to talk about science as an actual scientist, etc. If you know going in who's qualified to speak on a subject and who can be ignored, you can generally trust the basics, but you still have to be careful about false attributions and keep in mind that they often omit pertinent facts. |

If someone who was a PhD in evolutionary theory told me that raw milk was good for me I would not take it as true just on his say-so. OTOH, if I was in rural Georgia and I asked a local man where a town was, I wouldn't discount his answer if he said "It's about two miles ahead on the Augusta Road. Get there safe, praise Jesus!" I doubt I would discount his directions. |

None of that is really on point.Firstly, there is no such thing as competence in all fields and credentials are at best a guide to competence in one field, so no one is expecting you to take the odd advice of a PhD on a subject he's not necessarily familiar with. Secondly, in rural Georgia, "praise Jesus" is basically just a cultural idiom for "good luck" or somesuch and not really a claim as such. Thirdly, asking directions is a very simple thing that most anyone who knows the relevant area can be trusted to be capable of. Fourthly, certain kinds of crazy tend to get paired up. Creationism is a right-wing bugaboo and a feigned support for Jews and/or eagerness to use Jews as pawns for their own political ends are common practices among the right wing, so in this case it's assuming someone to be incompetent in one area because they have demonstrated mind-boggling incompetence in a similar area. |
