The five-seater Crossblue Coupe is meant to preview a smaller sister car to the CrossBlue, and like the seven seat version it is meant to address the large price gap between the compact Tiguan and the full-size Touareg. Like the Tiguan, the CrossBlue is being developed to expand Volkswagen's range in the crossover and SUV segments and to offer Volkswagen-priced options to consumers, which is something the Touareg has not been known for offering. The seven-seat version of the CrossBlue has been well past the concept stage for a few months, and last year Volkswagen gave journalists the opportunity to drive the CrossBlue on a closed test track. The SUV we drove was powered by a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain equipped with a lithium-ion battery, and on the outside it was actually larger and lower than the second-generation Touareg. Whatever the dimensions of the production version of the seven seater end up being, the company plans to ofer transversely-mounted four- and six-cylinder engines in the CrossBlue once it goes into production, which will help keep costs down. "With the midsize SUV, the expansion of the Chattanooga plant and the new development center, the focus is on the wishes of the US customer. This is also a strong signal for the US as an industrial and automobile production location. The Volkswagen brand is going on the attack again in America," said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, in Wolfsburg.
