Since a lot of people here seem to be IT folks:

Quite simply, what are the specifications of your current computer setup? (OS(es), display(s), processor(s), memory, etc...)

Dinosaur this thing is. It's so messed up half the time it doesn't even play sound. And my "speakers" are actually headphones since the speakers that came with it went kaput.

256mb memory
24x CD-RW/DVD combo

Running Win XP Pro
200gb Seagate HD in a CompUSA HD enclosure
Lucent Orinocco Wireless-B card

This machine has turned out to be one hell of a lemon. Thank god for service contracts and customer replacable components. At the moment I think the only original components are the case and the motherboard and processor. I'm on my third HD, second set of memory, third CD-ROM, second floppy drive, second keyboard, and second screen. I was stupid enough to order it without integrated wireless, and it doesn't have USB 2.0, so if I want to use that 200gb external to it's fullest I have to pull the wireless card from the PC card slot and replace it with a Belkin USB 2.0 card.

Given all the issues I have with this machine I'm looking to replace it with a new computer. Since I've never much cared for not knowing what was inside the box I'm thinking of assembling my own desktop to replace it. Something along these lines with a halfway decent mix between price and performance. I already have an old monitor which could provide yeoman duty until something better could be purchased, and it'd be possible to use the 200gb Seagate out of it's enclosure in that machine.

Well, here's mine:

Desktop: (Custom build)

  • AMD Athlon X2 4800+ (got a really good deal on it; otherwise there's no way I could even dream of affording that...)
  • 4GB PC3200 RAM @ 400mhz
  • 4x 10,000RPM 18.5GB SCSI drives in a RAID 0-1 config. ($25 each on Overstock.com, great site, although one was defective, which I had to return... :( )
  • Adaptec SCSI RAID controller
  • 2x ViewSonic 21" P225f Flat CRTs (my school threw them out!) at 2048x1536, on an ATI Radeon x800.
  • Plain InWin Case that I found on the street :)
  • Windows 2000 (I can't stand XP)

    Laptop: (Sony VAIO PCG-505g)

  • Pentium Processor at 200mhz
  • 96mb RAM
  • 10.4" LCD
  • 2.1gb HDD
  • No onboard CD ROM/Floppy
  • 1.4kg travel weight; .9cm thick/25cm wide/20cm long (its dimensions/weight are the primary reason I bought it used from my friend, for $35.)
  • Windows 2000 (which surprisingly, after a lot of optimization, it runs well!!)

Custom built (I hate companies like Dell, etc.) Took a whole year to get all of the money for the system (built it one component at a time basically):

    AMD64 3500+ 1600MHz FSB
    4GB DDR2 RAM
3x300GB (1 non-RAID, 2 in RAID 0/1 config, due to different model on 3rd drive)

    16x DVD±RW (with 4x DVD+R DL) drive
Windoze *lol* XP SP2 (soon to be reinstalled due to problems with Nortons Systemworks)
Connected to LinkSys wired router, router connected to OptimumOnline™, and PS 2.

    Desktops

Dell Dimension 4550 2.55 GHz Pentium 4 with 1024MB RAM, 30GB HD, 64MB ATI Video card, generic DVD ROM, HP 8220 external USB (yet stone-age) 4X4X6 CD-RW, 17in CRT monitor. Runs Windows XP Professional SP1. It's network name is ALP46.

Dell Dimension 4300S 1.5GHZ Pentium 4 with 384MB RAM, 20GB HD, integrated graphics, generic DVD-ROM. No monitor. It's currently serving as a file storage box until my lazy ass gets a KVM switch to share with the peripherals of the above desktop. I'm also thinking about testing a Linux based system (any suggestions?) or gasp, just putting on Apache with MySQL. It's network name is Silverliner.

    Laptops

IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad R51 1.65 GHz Centrino with 768MB RAM, 40GB HD, 64MB integrated graphics, CD-RW/DVD burner. Had an Intel based iBook laptop been availible in October, I'd be an OS X user now. It's network name is AEM7AC

IBM ThinkPad 570 336MHz Pentium II with 128MB, 10GB HD 4MB integrated graphics, 52X CD-ROM, includes Ultrabase. It's basically on the scrap line unless I can restore it (not likely since the LCD's dead and the battery's useless) or salvage it for parts. The 570's lighter than its 600 series counterpart, so it may be slow, but it was great in terms of portability. It's former name was ALP44.

The two iPods that we have serve as defacto portable hard drives each with 30GBs, so we're not having issues on hard drive space and such.

If you're really curious, my workgroup and wireless network is called NEC. :)

The 15" monitor is from 1996. It is a very nice display, it was sitting around the house (i.e. free), and it has served me well. I'm planning on getting a 19" flat panel this summer if I can find a job. (The one I thought I had fell through...grrr.)

I would switch, but the graphics applications that I work with have no equivalent substitutes on *nix :(.

    Which programs do you use?

I use: (that is, I use them when I'm not doing homework, which is the majority of the time. Then, I use WordPerfect 9.)

Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (6.0 and 9.0, respectively), Autodesk 3dsmax (4.0), Macromedia Flash (4.0). I got them all free from a coworker of my father whose brother is a graphics designer, who upgraded his products.

The SVG apps I've seen for *nix are nowhere near the quality of Illustrator. GIMP has approximately 1/5th the power of Photoshop. I don't know anyone who's upgrading Maya (the only 3D app. I know of for *nix), as I can't afford $4,000 for the program :-).

I have some samples of my work on my website, if you're curious...

Some Rotoscoped 3D Images from an Unreleased Animation (They involve a subway that resembles the R110b)

Another preview of an unreleased animation, this time with a motion sample!

And did you bring it to local computer shop for them to figure out if it was repairable or did you just give up without trying?

Cool work...it's too bad that you are locked in to XP because of those apps. And you could probably use a Mac if you didn't need that AutoDesk App. AutoCAD/Microstation and ESRI ArcView GIS are the apps that I'm having trouble migrating to Linux. At least the ESRI software works decently in my XP virtual machine with the stuff we do for my GIS class. I'm amused that the ESRI software is not really that great of a Windows app in terms of it's file chooser and some other interface features.

Yeah, it is too bad... I'd like to see some sort of hardware accelerator which can accelerate the emulation of APIs, so that it would practical to emulate Windows apps in Linux.

I'd also like to see an accelerator for translating assembly language...

I don't use a Mac because they're too expensive, and too difficult to upgrade. Also because I don't any Mac versions of any software.

I just got an NVidia 6200v+ for AGP slot and an extra 512DDR ram yesterday and installed it. All 3 slots are filled now for 1gig of ram.

The CPU is an AMD @ about 1.3ghz, which may be slow to people, but I don't notice whatsoever.

    TV card w/remote
    DVD/CD rewriter, writes DVD's.
Sony SRS-02100 speakers from a black friday sale.

    8gig HD for OS systems
200gig HD installed for everything else. Sheesh, I forget I got that thing on clearance, I have 35% used.
75Gig HD external for BVE routes and photos.
Everytype of car reader available in place of floppy.
19 inch flat panel, a few months old to replace my 17"CRT that's now on the floor which I've had since '96, or was it '97.
Bluetooth USB, Lexmark z600, um.....what else do I have?

    The Old Set-up

    The New Set-up

With my overzealous heatsink and fan.

    The keyboard lights up

I also now have a ACER Travelmate 2420 I got a few weeks ago. 512Ram, 1.5ghz DVD/CD writers. Airport, modem, EThernet. Open PCMIA slot. 6cell battery for 3 hours power, and my 6 buck bluetooth USB adaptor on the 3 USB slots. Bought a TV card for that one for 30 bucks too. :)
    Warning, this thing is awesome

I need a mac now. Though I got two junked Apple IIe's in the closet.
    ----

And to think, except the last 2 years, I NEVER upgrade!

If I had the 2 grand, I would've liked to have had one of those big Apple I-books, but I like this thing. Only thing I had to stick in was some ram, which was super easy. BVE works nice on here too. Bluetooth the audio to my desktop speakers.

    laptop speakers suck here.

570Gigs of HD space. I can't resist asking how much free space you have?

You may have more processor speed than me, but I have more video card memory. :)
