Even better than their parent roads . . . ?

You know, there's hardly any pix (if at all) of Erie Terminal in Jersey City. You can find pix of Exchange Place Terminal (PRR) and even Weehawken Terminal (NYC), but Erie Terminal is utterly elusive.

Even with killing the old Erie Main and DL&W Boonton roads . . . ? Soon as Erie Terminal went under, so did the Northern and Orange Branches, not to mention Susie-Q pax service after it got cut back to "Susquehanna Transfer".

One plus was sending the Phoebe Snow to Chicago.

I'm on the side of those that believe that the Erie Lackamoney coulda held their own against Conjobrail if they exercised their will instead of their greed, though . . .

the remains have been blown to the wind and dumped in the Fresh Kills Landfill. None are ar the WTC site. That havbing been said, if countries like Malaysia and Taiwan can have tall buildings, so can America. Build the things anyway. Super tall buildings have always taken DECADES to fully rent out, this is not a new thing, However, if America allows a so-so building there, they might as well hang it up as a nation.

There's nothing wrong with the Department of Homeland Security, only the name sucks. Most countries have the same functions vested in a Ministry of the Interior, a name which we've squandered for our land management agency.

Just in the 20th century, the United States made it through two world wars, two other major wars, and the Cold War, all without needing anything like the DHS. But now we're all piddling our panties in fear of the Towel Heads, so all of a sudden we need this agency. Yet we got along fine without it when the nation faced far GREATER threats.

As for your claims of defeat, lots of crybabies claimed that the US lost the Cold War at various points, such as when the Korean War ended, or the Berlin Wall was built. In the case of something as abstract and completely stupid as "the War on Terror." It's impossible to say whether anyone has won, and fear is the most efficient tool for maintaining power.

As abstract as the War on Terror may be, the United States lost it when we totally capitulated to fear. The passengers' failure to fight back lost us a battle, the nation's collective panty-piddling lost us a war.
As for fear as a means of maintaining power, that surely is true with respect to paranoia on the government level, e.g. transit photo bans. But it doesn't explain paranoia on the private level, e.g. turnstiles in office building lobbies.

I gotta agree with you here on the fear issue, but not on that caused us to lose the war on terror. The "War on Terror" is an instrument of fear, if there was no fear, there would be no war on terror.

As for fear as a means of maintaining power, that surely is true with respect to paranoia on the government level, e.g. transit photo bans. But it doesn't explain paranoia on the private level, e.g. turnstiles in office building lobbies.

Of course. But they don't gain anything by exploiting fear, unlike the government. In fact, from a building owner's point of view, the paranoia is costly (the cost of installing and maintaining the turnstiles, plus salaries and benefits for security personnel).

To the Nattering Nudniks of 9/11 who are Trying to Snub Development of Ground Zero: Shut. The. Fuck. Up. Yes, I feel for your pain and your loss, but, with all due respect, the remains of your loved ones have been removed/hosed off of surrounding buildings/taken to Fresh Kills Landfill/ cleaned out of subway stations/been sent to Taiwan along with the metal they recycled into steel parts/blown all over Brooklyn, Long Island, and out to sea. If you want to honor your lost beloved, look over there. The damage has been done already. Let's move ON, and let's rebuild!

I don't even know where to begin. You call those still suffering unimaginable grief - fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, police and fire - "Nattering Nudniks of 9/11" and then tell them to "Shut. The. Fuck. Up." Fine, I expect that out of you, along with your childlike obsession with leet and "cunt" and all the rest. Beyond all that, you have the unmitigated gall to first state that you feel their pain and loss and then preface your comments "... with all due respect? You make me sick. If not shared by you, their concerns are still valid - the desire for a memorial that dramatically and spiritually reaches upward towards the heavens, that incorporates the footprints and columns in an appropriate and sensitive manner, that has safety as a prime consideration for effective access and egress, that lists the names of the dead in something other than a random pattern. Like you, I am eager to see a fitting tribute and the rebuilding of the sight in the near future. It is one thing to want to "move on and rebuild"; it is something else entirely to speak of a profound and solemn undertaking with an unconscionable and apalling lack of feeling. Remains hosed off of buildings and cleaned out of subway stations and sent to Taiwan as part of recycled metal? Sometimes things are better off left unsaid. Blame the process, fault the designers or the politicians or the PA or Silverstein, but leave the others to their grief. Have you no sense of decency? Have you no shame? How dare you.

We have the same "takes forever" syndrome here in Baltimore.

In 1978 the Tower Building, a 1913 skyscraper on Baltimore Street at Guilford Avenue was torn down for a new, taller building.

To this day, the site is a (what else) parking lot.

I do not pretend to be as knowledgable of the revised plan as perhaps I should be, but the glass and steel structure (Sept 2005) seems on the face a thoughtful and practical design and fitting tribute. The WTC complex was a center of commerce and transport, as it should be once again - you get knocked down, you get back up. I appreciate the architectural constraints with respect to space, so no, I am not against the PATH station per se. Still, in a perfect world, I'd still prefer that the memorial occupy the footprint(s), just as the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor sits atop the ship and the cemetery at Normandy sits atop the hill. No matter, my point is "their concerns" are as valid today as they were last year, and whether or not I agree is immaterial as I cannot fully appreciate "their loss". Finally, after sleeping on it and with apologies to those offended by my language, I do not regret directing my anger at that post(er).

Well, while I do have feelings, I do feel the relatives were interacting with Larry Silverstein, the City of New York, and the Port Authority in such a way as to produce such an enormous deadlock as to be counterproductive. While the "Nattering Nudniks of 9/11" may be right, they are nonetheless being annoying with their requests, just as Silverstein (may he diaf), Bloomberg, and the Port Authority are being annoying in their tug-of-war. All of them are nattering nudniks as well and ought to TRY a compromise instead of throwing hissy fits.

That being said, the relatives of 9/11 victims deserve their memorials, and the 9/11 victims deserve their peace.
