There's nothing wrong with the Department of Homeland Security, only the name sucks. Most countries have the same functions vested in a Ministry of the Interior, a name which we've squandered for our land management agency.Just in the 20th century, the United States made it through two world wars, two other major wars, and the Cold War, all without needing anything like the DHS. But now we're all piddling our panties in fear of the Towel Heads, so all of a sudden we need this agency. Yet we got along fine without it when the nation faced far GREATER threats. As for your claims of defeat, lots of crybabies claimed that the US lost the Cold War at various points, such as when the Korean War ended, or the Berlin Wall was built. In the case of something as abstract and completely stupid as "the War on Terror." It's impossible to say whether anyone has won, and fear is the most efficient tool for maintaining power. As abstract as the War on Terror may be, the United States lost it when we totally capitulated to fear. The passengers' failure to fight back lost us a battle, the nation's collective panty-piddling lost us a war. As for fear as a means of maintaining power, that surely is true with respect to paranoia on the government level, e.g. transit photo bans. But it doesn't explain paranoia on the private level, e.g. turnstiles in office building lobbies. My LIRR/NYCT blog |
