Whether one identifies as gay or not, is directly proportional to the negative consequences that person perceives he will suffer as a result of such self-identification, up to and including being disowned by his family, injury, and even summary execution. It is for this reason that the true number of gays and lesbians in contemporary society cannot be known. I suspect the actual number of gays and lesbians is quite a bit higher than reported. |
