But some point out the effect of cultural forces, as obviously homosexuality was more common in ancient Greece and Rome.I doubt it was more common. It was just less stigmatized in pre-Christian times. Because of this, homosexual ACTIVITY may have been more common but not the % of people who were gay. I imagine that's it's safe to say that homosexual activity is more common in the US today than it was 100 years ago because of less stigma. By the same standard such activity is more common in the US than in Iran (which is what leads crackpots like I'adinnerjacket to say that there are no gays there). The % of people who are LGBT is probably the same. Case in point, when I was growing up in a culturally conservative small town in Southern Italy in the 80's, there were very few openly gay people. Nobody in my school ever outed him/herself. The only gay club was a disco of the kind that attracted weird closeted gays from all over the area and no straight person in his right mind would ever go there. Everytime I went back there were more and more. Now they have many gay bars, kids in high school who are openly gay or lesbian (and proud of it), gay parades, supportive parents and straight friends that are in solidarity with their gay brothers and sisters. The Puglia region has the distinction of having elected and re-elected an openly gay governor (complete with earring), a first in Italy (and in most places including the US). That's even more shocking than America electing a black guy named Hussein for President. I would have found all of this unthinkable until only a few years ago. Society has even passed me by when it comes to these things. I deeply regret the many bad things that I jokingly said about gays (f-g jokes and the like) when I was younger. I was wrong. It will only get better for our fellow citizens who happen to be gay thanks to people like JayZeeBMT no matter what people say. The haters are losing and they know it. |
