Well it is a lifestyle, inasmuch that gays typically embrace a certain culture. But take heart, in my post talking about bi girls/gay gays, I linked to a study done in Sweden of ALL the twins there that shows conclusively that in men sexual orientation is ~40% heritable. There is no self-selection bias going on which has been a criticism of previous behavioral genetic studies of sexual orientation.

There is however an epigenetic consideration. While sexual orientation clearly has genetic roots, whether one identifies as gay may depend on environmental factors. These factors need not be social and no doubt some aren't.
