Inmates get free healthcare and free higher education. They also have a certainty of a roof over their head and food in their belly. None of these are certainties for free persons and that is just wrong.

Several years back, a life without parole inmate in Oregon who needed a kidney was pushed to the front of the line (and later denied) because not doing so constituted "cruel and unusual punishment". The 8th Amendment made sense when people were tarred and feathered or had their heads cut off. It doesn't make sense when they can live a better life incarcerated than free persons.
