Three cheers for modern logistics!

I ordered some baking supplies (after all, the holidays are upon us) from a company it turns out is in Plattsburgh. That's a few hours north of here. Shipped UPS, it arrived at the Latham hub, our local hub where stuff goes on trucks to be delivered locally to places that include my zip code. Four hours later, it left Latham, destination unknown, when one would have expected it to be put on a truck for delivery on Monday. I called UPS and the girl on phone, while polite, tried to explain to me that despite all common sense, rational thought and profit potentially gained, told me that the package could not be delivered on Monday, as the shipping class required 5-7 business days for delivery. So they sent it somewhere. Nobody seemed to know where, just that there is no reported problems and it would arrive "on time".

Is it not more profitable (as the box is currently occupying space that could have gone to yet another) to have put it on a truck for delivery the next business day (Mon), less wasteful of fuel (a parked truck uses none, for example) and therefore greener and better policy to get a package delivered early to create customer goodwill at the start of delayed package season. Who came up with this? Do they no longer require a basic comprehension of geography for logistics grads?

This package, BTW has a standard UPS tracking number. Avoid UPS at all opportunities. I'd prefer United Van Lines shipped it, I'd have it by now.
