The system, when it comes to police officers killing people like Eric Garner, isn't working. Every young child of color, upon reaching his or her early teens, is given "the talk" by his or her parents about how to deal with cops who automatically assume they are criminals, absent any supporting evidence. White kids don't generally have to fear being accosted, harassed, hurt or killed on G.P., because the police usually look like them. This needs to change, and peaceful protests are the first steps towards such change, just as they have been for the civil- and LGBT-rights movement.

What's missing here (and I said this to TIME Magazine last weekend) is a willingness on BOTH sides to have a real dialogue about how thinks can be better handled in the future. Again, advocating killing of cops isn't right, but neither are bombastic statements like "I hope police treat all unidentified fish as sharks". That kind of thinking will just escalate things even more.
