I'm not getting "carried away", not at all. I do believe, from firsthand experience, that there are too many cops out there who have deep-seated bigotries against the people of color they're assigned to deal with. It's manifestly evident that Pantaleo, who was the subject of numerous IAB complaints (and a couple of lawsuits) falls into this category. The issue of fact--whether Pantaleo should be criminally culpable for his actions--is for a trial jury to decide, and he should have had hos day in court. The police must be just as accountable for things like prisoners who die in their custody, as you or I are for obeying all the laws of the day.

Yes, it is a very emotional issue for me, too. I cannot fathom or accept how the grand jury in the Garner case (we're unlikely to ever know the whole truth of the Ferguson case, but it does seem overwhelmingly clear to me that Wilson's account of the incident is seriously deficient and suspicious) saw the same video we all did, yet still failed to indict. People who couldn't possibly have committed crimes they're accused of, get indicted all the time, because it's a prosecutor's forum. It strains credulity to think Donovan couldn't have indicted Pantaleo, given the quality of the state's evidence.

You cannot understand, for lack of experience, the way people of color must comport themselves in everyday life. Racial profiling, by the police, merchants, and educators, is real, pervasive, and getting worse. (See the Macy's and Barney's 'Shopping while Black' cases, to begin with.) As long as people of color are 21 times more likely to be stopped by the police in the course of their normal activities, and eight times more likely to die in police custody, there is, and remains, a severe issue with American criminal justice.
