I was under the impression that in NY you can get a summons if the light turns red before you have completely left the intersection.

If I am right, just because it's yellow when you are in the middle of the intersection doesn't mean you are home free. You were supposed to heed the yellow and not enter an intersection on the yellow if you didn't have time to get out too.
