There are many, which in some primitive societies means more than 2.

The easiest way to catalog the obvious ones would be to get the bus maps on the MTA site and look at the bridges. The inter-borough bus routes will be shown crossing the bridge.

That still leaves the Brooklyn/Queens routes that use a land crossing. Look at the boundary line on either the Brooklyn or Queens maps and go from there.

****The B52 and B54 only extend a block into Queens. The Q55 only extends a block into Brooklyn.

edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr
I've always found it very strange that there is only one local bus route between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Brooklyn and Manhattan were two separate cities before 1898. Each of their governments had awarded separate franchises for separate routes to separate companies. These franchises remained valid after consolidation.

The Brooklyn Bridge operated its own railroad. Trolleys did not operate over the Brooklyn Bridge until after consolidation. The Brooklyn trolleys ran only to an off-street terminal at Park Row.

The Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges allowed existing Brooklyn trolleys to operate to a terminal in Manhattan and existing Manhattan street cars to operate to a terminal on the Brooklyn side. The various franchises awarded before consolidation remained intact. The same was used for the Queensboro Bridge.

New York City had annexed the Bronx before consolidation. The problem of exclusive franchises awarded by two separate governments did not exist.

Just a slight rearrangement of the routes you listed.

Manhattan-Bronx: Bx3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 19, 20, 33, 35, 36
Bronx-Queens: Q44, Q50, Q100
Manhattan-Queens: M60, Q32, Q60, Q101, Q102
Manhattan-Brooklyn: B39
Brooklyn-Queens: B13, 15, 20, 24, 26, 32, 38, 52, 54, 57, 62. Q7, 8, 24, 35, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59.
Staten Island-Brooklyn: S53, S79, S93.
Staten Island-Hudson (NJ): S89.
Queens-Nassau: Q5, Q36, Q46, Q85, Q111, Q113, Q114.
Bronx-Westchester: Bx16, BxM3
Express Routes serving Two Boroughs before Entering Manhattan Below 125th Street: BM5 (Brooklyn-Queens), BxM1 (Bronx, Inwood), X17 (SI-BK)

I added Bx6 and B26 to the list in their appropriate places. Bx6 is omitted, but runs along 155th Street in Manhattan.
B26 is included as it runs along Wyckoff Avenue at a portion of that street which serves as the Brooklyn-Queens border.

The BxM4 still stops at 125th, as part of its Manhattan zone (drop-off only southbound, pick-up only northbound, the latter at 123rd). That last category is a little odd but what I think he is trying to say is that the BxM1 serves both Bronx and Manhattan before crossing over to its other "zone." In other words, the southbound BxM1 does pickups in the Bronx and in Upper Manhattan, and then goes to drop-off mode later in Manhattan. That's why I think he used 125th St as the boundary.

Basically, what happened is that in September 2012, they decided to add Sunday service to the X17, but have it gain a little ridership by picking up some old X28 riders on both Saturday & Sunday.

They realized that there were a decent amount of people using the 86th Street stop for SI-Brooklyn travel (all buses have to stop there Manhattan-bound. Towards Staten Island, you had some B/Os that would bypass it if nobody was getting off). Lately, all the B/Os I've seen have been stopping there on the outbound trip (and a good thing too, because every time, I've seen at least 1 person board the bus who would've otherwise been waiting for the next bus on those long headways).

Yeah, if anything I would say 86th Street ridership is actually a bit heavier towards SI than towards Manhattan. (Likely because of the availability of alternatives like the X28 and (R) train).

I will say that another express bus where I've seen a decent amount of people use it like a local bus is the X10 (I've done it myself, actually). Not on a consistent basis like at the X17 Brooklyn stop, but a decent amount. (It also helps that Fingerboard is an official express bus transfer point).

Would you or anyone else know how common it was for BM riders to transfer to the B103 for Downtown Brooklyn, thus getting there from the outer reaches of Brooklyn "in style" at the express bus pricing? I understand this was the point of the B103 originally with Command - to take BM1 - 4 riders and shuttle them Downtown as an alternative to Manhattan.

The B-103 was a premium fare route with limited stops. The fare was more than regular, but less than express. Triboro Q-53 Woodside-Rockaway is another example. There were also zone fare routes such as Green Q-60 and Jamaica Q-113.

edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr
But for the B-103 a free transfer from an express bus at Church Ave / E 7 St allowed anyone from Mill Basin, Sheepshead Bay, and Gerritsen Beach, as opposed to only Canarsie, to get to Downtown Brooklyn via Command Bus, and presumably more comfortably than using local bus / subway, right? I remember hearing that the only reason the B-103 went to Canarsie as opposed to the other BM destinations is that it was nearest the depot, but the route was meant for all BM branches to get to Downtown Brooklyn.

How did the zone fares work for the Q60 / Q113? Did the bus operator keep track of zones traveled?

Thanks. Do you remember the zone boundaries for those Queen routes by chance?

BTW what does NJT do nowadays regarding zone-based fare collection? I haven't used their buses in a long time. I remember it being at least somewhat reliant on the honor system.
