Basically, what happened is that in September 2012, they decided to add Sunday service to the X17, but have it gain a little ridership by picking up some old X28 riders on both Saturday & Sunday. They realized that there were a decent amount of people using the 86th Street stop for SI-Brooklyn travel (all buses have to stop there Manhattan-bound. Towards Staten Island, you had some B/Os that would bypass it if nobody was getting off). Lately, all the B/Os I've seen have been stopping there on the outbound trip (and a good thing too, because every time, I've seen at least 1 person board the bus who would've otherwise been waiting for the next bus on those long headways). Yeah, if anything I would say 86th Street ridership is actually a bit heavier towards SI than towards Manhattan. (Likely because of the availability of alternatives like the X28 and (R) train). I will say that another express bus where I've seen a decent amount of people use it like a local bus is the X10 (I've done it myself, actually). Not on a consistent basis like at the X17 Brooklyn stop, but a decent amount. (It also helps that Fingerboard is an official express bus transfer point). |
