Yes they were. Those would be 2-3 years old at the time. The whole order, a bit less than 200, were all based at the 2 Queens depots, Jamaica & Flushing.

This young kid from Brooklyn only rode them a handful of times unfortunately.
A few did make it to Brooklyn as their service lives were winding down.

Saultell Ave. and Van Doren St. is where the B58 (now Q58) used to run westbound coming from Flushing, to get to the easternmost section of Corona Ave.; the eastbound routing was always via 108th St. to be able to cross under the LIE. Eventually, the route was changed to use 108th St. in both directions. But at the time of the 1964-1965 Fair, that was the case.

We didn't own a car. My family took the Worlds Fair bus from Flatbush & Nostrand in Brooklyn. IIRC he fare was $1. It was possibly the worst bus ride in my life. Of course I don't remember the exact route but do remember that the bus took forever to get to the World's Fair, apparently passing through some pretty bad neighborhoods along the way.

The TA was too cheap and stupid to purchase air-conditioned buses for the WF specials, so we all sweltered in this bus with the windows blowing hot air and exhaust fumes on the passengers.

Surface Transit had a few routes that took forever to get where they were going. WE would take the old Bx-29 Willis Avenue bus from 156th Street down to the Day Line pier at 125th Street. When you got on the bus you were just entering the first grade. By the time that you got off you were leaving high school.

The fare was a quarter. It was the B80. The B81 left from Eastern Parkway and Utica. Took it the second year. We sat and the ride was comfortable. Didn’t use the sign in the picture. I believe the route number was on the sign.

Sounds like the B81 may have been the line my mother and I took to the Fair in 1964. My parents and I were still living with my grandparents in East New York (near the Newlots Av IRT station). We boarded at the B10 stop on Newlots and Ashford. Bus was a brand new Flxible (though I wouldn't know about the name Flxible until many years later, but even at 5 years old, I could tell that it was a different bus from the Old Looks and Fishbowls that I was used to seeing). The sign was set to a blank position, no World's Fair sign. Maybe that route paralled the route of the 2 subway. Don't remember our route from Ashford, I suspect it used the B10 route, but past Berriman to Dumont, to Fountain to Linden Blvd, passed what would be Times Square Stores and on to Conduit (basically todays B15), Probably Conduit/Belt Pkwy to Van Wyck and on to the fair. I think we took the 7 to the 2 back home. Don't recall if it was a WF special or a regular 7. Don't remember too much about the Fair, except the Monorail, which I though was the coolest thing ever. It was sponsored by sporting good company AMF, whose logo was prominently feature on the front of the cars. Being 5 years old, I assumed AMF had actually built the monorail, I was shocked years later when I saw a commercial for some sporting goods built by AMF.

Yes, the 8001-8202/8301-8780 was the first order. 20 of the 5301s that OA inherited from FACCo were equipped with a/c.

Oh OK. FACCo had 120 GMC TDH-5301 buses (3101-3220) with the last 20 buses having a/c. They were painted into the green color scheme when they came to MaBSTOA but retained the same fleet numbers.

Did the B81 pass the Broadway Junction because I (vaguely) remember my parents taking me to the World's Fair by bus and remember us walking toward the Broadway Junction and then getting on a direct bus to the World's Fair near the Broadway Junction. i was only six or seven at the time. I also remember in the afternoon leaving the World's Fair looking at the buses at the World's Fair Terminal and hoping we took the right bus home.

Of course. In those days a/c on NYCTA/MABSTOA largely worked barely more than 2-3 years after they were delivered. I do remember that FI seemed to be the exception as many of their '69/'70 4000-series Flxibles had functioning a/c right into the late 70's.

Giving some credit... I do recall that KB was able to keep the a/c working on some of their 8000s (8301-8371) well into the 70s.

So true. Coming home from Main/Roosevelt, I could take Queens Transit 25/34 or TA Q17. If the 25/34 had AC it probably worked. Glancing at the 17 the open windows were the dead giveaway.
