I would, but one of the local bartenders in my neighborhood, declined to renew his license the last time it expired since he doesn’t own a car anymore.

Not all. My mother never had a license and after my father died, there was nobody around to teach me. Fortunately I was able to afford a driving school.

Some of the people I know aren’t dirt poor but are in fact well to do. They just never saw any reason to drive when they live in a city like NY which in many areas has good 24/7 transit service.

I am aware there are lots of people like that. I wasn't talking about them, though.

Like how I'm talking about people who have no drivers ed and no one taught them, while Randyo said he did take a drivers ed course.

Then again, what would I expect from soemone who made racist comments about sexuality flags.

I agree. Even if I gave up my car, I would still maintain my license. I got my license at 19 years of age and for the next 9 years the only thing I “drove” was a subway train.

But not everyone has one. My brother has no driver's license (he failed the test three times, so gave up on it), although he and his wife do own a car and she drives it. Neither of my parents had a driver's license until I was in my teens. My sister has one, but never learned to drive on highways (expressways/freeways). She will only drive on local streets.

My mother has never driven a car either. Nor did 3 of my aunts. All born between 1930 and 1940. Maybe it’s a generational thing. My mother’s best friend from down the block started driving about 20-25 years ago and will not drive on a parkway or expressway. Everything is on a local street. And if she can avoid a stop sign in favor of a light, she’ll go out of her way to travel through the intersection with the light instead of the stop sign.

Highway driving is way easier.

In general, I would agree. There certainly isn't much mental effort required to drive I-94 across North Dakota at 75 mph.

But driving an urban highway that you aren't familiar with, with left and right exits (and you don't know which yours will be), can be pretty scary for some people.

I said never would have been a priority. I didn't say never would have occurred.

But you are right, it would have been a priority for some. If you are low income in an area without public transportation, getting a driver's license has to be a priority.

My ex wife had a friend who was just the opposite. She would drive out of her way to get to a highway entrance even if she only had to drive 5 blocks on local streets. As an example, her in Bay Ridge, if she needed to go from 73 St to 78 St, she would drive 8 blocks down to 65 St get on the Belt Pky to the next exit which was about 105 St and drive back to 78 St. She was actually driving more on the streets doing it that way than if she had just driven straight down 5 av from 73 to 78.

It should be a priority but sometimes it’s not I worked with a person who lived in Staten Island where you virtually need a car to gat anywhere but he didn’t own a car. I ran into him at the Pathmark on Richmond Av and he was loading his groceries into a cab. He explained that because he had male children under 25 in his household, his car insurance would have gone through the roof so he gave up his car and opted for cabs and car services.

That’s pretty silly but I much prefer the highway where it is practical. Like I would take the belt instead of a direct route across Brooklyn via Flatbush or something.

I agree. I pick the highway even if it the app suggests it will be a few minutes longer - it makes the drive less stressful.

I don't know if it's still there but there has been a highway-like sign northbound on Flatbush just north of the Belt Pkwy on the way to Kings Plaza that invites you to continue on to eventually access the Manhattan Bridge. I wonder how often that invitation has been accepted!

If I have to go from Bay Ridge to either Marine Pk or Gerritsen Bch, I check the traffic reports and if the Belt is congested I use local streets. Same thing coming back.

Although, I'd heard of a time where it was an option in Philadelphia, too.

When PTC had transfers, I remember riding a bus (Route L) with my Mom that loaded at Broad and Olney.A loader stood at the back doors and took your paper transfer . If you had cash , you had to go to the front door. More recently , this could have been the set-up at major transportation centers, when Septa still had paper transfers, which are now gone,.Most people have KEY cards, and the bus readers are up front, the Red box. San Francisco has card readers at the rear doors, so you can enter with a tap card. I believe many cities have this option. Septa needs to catch up .
