Like New York, Houston had early Grumman Flxible 870s that had frame issues. In college (1983), one of my classmates in a civil engineering class (who was from Houston), decided for his solo presentation to discuss a transit equipment problem in his home city. He then spoke about the Grumman (which he mispronounced GROO-man instead of GRUH-min) "Flexi-band" buses that were breaking down because the "Flexi-band" suspension was flexing too much. I exhibited extreme control not to laugh, because it was clear to me as someone who had educated himself on the bus industry through direct contact with operating and manufacturing companies, including Flxible - that my classmate had done essentially no research on the issue beyond what he may have gleaned from news articles, as he had neither the product name nor the actual problem correct. News reporters assigned to "the transportation beat" aren't any better. I often see terrible mistakes in articles about transportation... the NJ.com/Star-Ledger reporter who covers NJ Transit had such a glaring error about the CNG motorcoach order, I had to write to him in the comments section. He responded that he would research my notation. Basically, his figure for the contract price would have made the bus price nowhere near what it actually was. |

For example, is there a reason why the west side of manhattan north-south has no overnight service past 6th Avenue? M15,M2,M101/102/103 and M7 are 24/7.Also, 34th,50th st,57th,66th and 72nd have no overnight crosstown service. that means between 1am and 5am its hard to go crosstown without a cab between those destinations. Improve service where needed. SBS isn't needed on woodhaven boulevard. this is what id do: Restore Q53 to service as it used to. Or make it stop where customer service is heaviest(A/C connection,Metropolitan av) Jamaica and Atlantic Avenue aren't necessary. Q52 full 24/7 limited to cover what Q53 doesn't stop at and make it 60-foot buses. Just a opinion. |
