M12 route change maybe

On mta.info website there is plans to implement a M12 service to operate via 11th and 12th avenue. Isn't 11th Avenue two way at least between 50th street and 57th. Wouldn't it make sense to run it there instead of 12th Avenue?

It looks like it's two-way up to 45th Street (between 44th & 45th, it has the striping of a two-way street, but on Google Streetview, all of the cars are going one-way southbound)

But yeah, it probably would make more sense (especially since the M50 already runs along 12th Avenue south of 49th/50th). The only logical reason I can think of would be to avoid some of the traffic near the Lincoln Tunnel (assuming it gets backed up north of 50th). But then again, you're going in the opposite direction of the Lincoln Tunnel traffic (northbound rather than southbound).

In any case, here's the link for the new routing: http://web.mta.info/mta/news/hearings/

A public hearing at 5:30PM on May 14th, at 347 Madison Avenue.

No, the purpose is deliberately to run up 12th Avenue for people who need service on the far west side - Intrepid, ferries to NJ, sightseeing along the bike path. Otherwise it would pretty much duplicate the M11 up 10th Avenue (if it ran up 11th Ave) and that would defeat the purpose.

While we are on the subject, wouldn't make more sense in the long term to send the M 12 to Battery Park? And was the original plan to send it to SOHO nearby the M 21 terminal and not its current terminal to share with the M 11?

Or at least to the WTC site near Vesey Street for subway connections.

Yeah, that was the original plan.

Maybe the idea was to avoid duplication with the M20 (and for what it's worth, I don't think the old version had a connection with the A/C/E/L). They probably wanted to make it cost-neutral relative to the original plan, so since they extended it on the northern end, they cut it back on the southern end.

I checked the notice on mta.info, and M12 shows up with a text description that says M12 LOCAL, but the map below it is labeled M12 EXPRESS.

Also:
For me, 30 minutes for the next bus is a long wait, especially if they have problems keeping to schedule.

11th Ave is two-way traffic in three different sections: West 23rd to 24th Streets, West 37th Street to West 40th Street while turning into the Lincoln Tunnel north tube, and from West 44th Street to where it changes to West End Ave at 59/60th Streets. All other locations along 11th Ave are one-way southbound. It's not feasible to have M12 buses run on 11th Ave in both directions.

Yeah, the express is definitely a typo. (The only way it would be possible for it to be an express would be if it was a route like the old X25/X90, but obviously, the route isn't designed like that)

And yeah, 30 minute headways during rush hour in Manhattan is a good way to ensure nobody rides this route.

But north of West 44th Street, it could still run on 11th Avenue (or maybe 50th Street for the sake of simplicity, since the M50 runs there). It would still serve the Intrepid, NJ ferries, boke path, etc.

All their new routes recently seem to start with 30 minute headways. I guess they want to gauge demand before increasing service.

I can't disagree. Plus about 25 minutes running time with 5 minutes recovery = 2 buses on the line at any one time.

Well I don't necessarily disagree with that general logic, but there's times and places to make exceptions. A low frequency is alright if the route is fairly reliable, so you know that if you get there 5 minutes before it's scheduled to come, you won't have to wait too long (maybe you'll wait 10 minutes instead of 5 minutes). But on a route dealing with Manhattan traffic, it needs to be more frequent, or else people are going to stick with the alternatives (either the subway or the M11), because nobody wants to experience bunching on 30 minute headways.

I just find it ironic that they're making such a big deal about adding short shuttles to growing neighborhoods, and yet they cut the B71, which was exactly that (and ridership was growing before they cut it). Ridership was 1,080 riders per weekday before it was cut, which was higher than the B32, B84, and Bx46 (even accounting for the fact that these services started mid-year, and the average daily ridership will likely be higher next year), and the cost-efficiency was probably better as well.

Like others have said, 12th ave northbound is good. The MTA originally proposed the DOT change 11th Ave south of 57 St to 1 way southbound. During PM rush, tunnel traffic backs up as far north as 57 st often delaying M31 buses.
