Op-Ed: Not sold on B44 Select Bus

Just when you thought service could not get any worse on the B44 bus, the MTA reaches a new low with Select Bus Service.

The old, canceled limited bus service needs to be returned to this route because the SBS buses on Nostrand and Bedford Aves. are a disservice.

They do not stop at the former limited stops so that the people who wait there actually get less bus service than before via packed local buses.

Meanwhile, the SBS buses are mostly empty, with just a handful of passengers on those extra long vehicles; and they still run in bunches!

We were sold the idea of SBS buses as a way to prevent people from sneaking on to buses through the back door.

I wasn’t persuaded.

There was no enforcement on any buses previously.

I believe the MTA will cook the data by putting undercover officers on the SBS buses to show how effective they are against fare beaters.

Still, I waited for a crowded local bus for 20 minutes the the other day.

With Bus Rapid Transit (SBS in NYCT jargon), I think NYCT wants B44 riders to change their mindset overnight and "make believe" the line is subway like with no more stops a few blocks apart, rather make them walk to and from an SBS stop. They are going to lose so much time waiting for the local, it will be worth their while taking the SBS and walking the rest of the way.

I hear the same complaint from a co-worker in reference to Hylan Blvd. So many S79's but so few S78's. So folks get disgusted and walk farther.

IDK if Flatbush runs are interlined, IDK if the B44 SBS operators are interlined with the local for daily job purposes, but I'll repeat what I've said all along: NYCT is trying to get the most production out of the workforce daily, especially the ones that have to follow a schedule every day. By having an SBS B44 they could be saving $$$ on operators' daily pay since it requires a shorter amount of time to make a trip, which ultimately translates into the entire workday. Same with a LTD on any line. A shorter bus operator trip = labor savings. This translates into monetary savings for
the entire workday. Yes they save $$$ on the B44 SBS vs. the LTD. Every minute they can save on salaries translates into $$$$$ for NYCT.

If anybody thinks SBS is costing NYCT more money, well I have a bridge to sell you!

I am not saying I agree with it, but I have a pretty good idea what the mindset is since I've been working for them long before many of you were even born.

When it comes to waiting time for trains and buses, the public has a problem with the perceived waiting time vs. the actual waiting time.

The public rides around with stopwatches?

decided to try the new SBS today,to visit a sick friend at Kings County today.

unbelievable...the trip was pretty much uneventful, except for the reroute along tompkins avenue...and the expected long wait.

the return trip was a horror show...and showed why i should have driven..even though parking is sickening.
waited almost a half hour for the 44 local bus in the freezing cold, along with a dozen other riders...who were even less pleased than i.

all the complaint we been hearing?
true..and well founded.
found out the SBS does not give out transfers to local buses, too.

its a wrap for me.

I have taken a couple B44 SBS trips now.

If you are waiting for B44 local well, there is no hope when you see lots of B44 SBS passed by, one by one. They do look angry when they are waiting on B44 local bus forever.

What a mess. How the TA can let this go on and not monitor these services closely during the roll-out is mind-boggling. I think stops will be added and the B44 SBS will eventually be the old limited service with wrapped buses.

I am not sold on this service. They are killing it the same way they "promoted" the Bx41 SBS+. In the Bx41, the last buses leave Gun Hill at 9 PM, and approx. 9:35-45 PM from the Hub. And they run 12 minute headways on weekends, pathetic.

The B44 was designed to fail with the rerouting of northbound buses on Rogers Ave, forcing customers at Kings County/SUNY Downstate hospitals to walk up to half mile. There is not enough B44 local service and the B44 SBS does not travel the full Williamsburg/Sheepshead Bay route on many runs.

I am going to take time out to do a full report on the Bx41 SBS one day by Christmas.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I WOULD HAVE PERFERRED A NICE LIGHT RAIL LINE DOWN ALONG THE ROUTE NOW TAKEN BY THE B44 BUS. IF THE M.T.A IS EVER GOING TO GET LIGHT RAIL STARTED IN NEW YORK CITY,IT HAS TO START WITH SOME BUS ROUTE IN ANY OF THE FIVE BOROUGHS. PLUS, I HAVE SEEN A PICTURE TAKEN BY THE M.T.A OF SOME OLD STREET CAR TRACKS BEING REMOVED AND PILED TO THE SIDE AND NEW REPAVING BEING DONE SO THAT THIS NEW B44 CAN OPERATE MORE SMOOTHLY.

What's the advantage? You need a dedicated fleet for it and if there's an obstruction in the way, you can't drive around it or 'leap frog' the leader. Finally, would this mean Nostrand would be exclusive for the trolley or would cars be allowed on it as well? All that and you may as well just have a true BRT with its own dedicated lanes instead of taking away the parking lanes for the rush hours.

This article is pure bullshit as the guy has no clue what he's talking about.

In reality, the SBS is a success on the B44, with a few minor glitches - most noticeable: the local service needs to be increased to take up folks on those LTD stops that were eliminated (mostly from Gates Avenue and give or take at Avenue L).

10-12 minute headways will not cut it until Rogers Avenue picks up, which it will take 6-12 months to happen, in full.

Some SBS buses may run empty because of the locals running in 6-7 packs, so when the SBS shows up, those folks were already loaded on the bunched local pack, when they should have been on the SBS.

I can attest that when BusTime is fully activated in January, the 44 bunching (along with other Brooklyn bus routes) will end, as control room dispatchers can evenly spread service along the line.

I really don't understand this statement. If the SBS is running on time and that is the bus the riders want, why in the world should the fact that 6 to 7 locals running at once have any affect on how crowded the SBS is? That just makes no sense.

Also, the SBS is not as empty as they appear to be. Since the buses are longer, an appearingly empty SBS would be a crowded local with the same number of passengers. Common sense just says if you run short buses on the local and long buses on the SBS, you will need more locals, but the MTA decided to run more SBS's than locals to save money.

Add that to the fact that all those limited stops were removed, many people are not yet aware of the shift to Rogers Avenue for half the buses, the two block extra walk for Kings County Hospital users and no wonder the locals will be overcrowded and therefore delayed which only encourages more bus bunching.

This should have been no surprise to te MTA. I predicted all of this

Also, I will hold you to your last comment about bus bunching. I sure hope you are correct, but I highly doubt it. There is still bus bunching in Manhattan and the Bronx where they have had it for awhile. Hopefully, it will lessen bus bunching somewhat.

but the MTA decided to run more SBS's than locals to save money.

This is the core problem. MTA has decided to slice service by a gigantic percentage (half? more?) to a ridiculous number of locations (all non-SBS stops south of Ave U and north of Flushing) as well as ex-limited stops that did not make it to SBS status.

They save money and get publicity for "improving" service.

SBS is doomed to fail without solid, dependable local service, especially this particular line which continues to be unsuitable for SBS service at all.

Thanks. And meh no point wasting time arguing about this. I ride the b41 daily, lf buses suck during the rush hours. The only lf buses that are good are the artics. Maybe fb should get more artics for the local only lines when it comes time to replace the rtss.

yeah..there are better ways to deal with that, than be funky about it. he should have understood, instead of being a bitch about it.

you know there are more buses coming due to the delayed bus purchase.we just have to wait.

I hope it's the xd60s. I like the interior seating setup than on the lfsa.

It makes plenty sense.
Why? Because as I've operated my SBS bus down Nostrand Avenue, I'll pass a train-like local pack of buses, loaded with passengers, as a I fly by with a fully seated artic (and you can see the facial expression of those on the local bus as they finally see these +Selects flying by). This is because of these local buses have left 10-15 minutes before me (at Flushing Avenue), and by the time I get to Fulton to handle the big load, there's none there; the local buses have taken up the load since they didn't see a 'LIMITED' in sight (basically no one wants to wait, or afraid to learn the new system).

Those blue lights would definitely help on Nostrand or Rogers Avenues, to distict express from local.
