Even with having to transfer though, the RR is still probably faster because of the traffic on Northern Blvd and in midtown

Even with that transfer it's probably still faster than taking the express bus. I made the mistake of taking it once to Little Neck and I will NEVER do that again

I think you would have potential from the Dix Hills area, but only if you could fill a bus at a single stop (one of the park and rides) and put it right onto the LIE HOV lane.

Any tooling around with local stops or making multiple detours off the expressway will kill your running time.

I'd probably have only the midtown buses stopping at Queens College, not the Wall St runs. From what I'm seeing with Long Island Transit their midtown buses don't carry as well, so Queens College could help fill a few more seats. Wall St buses will not make the stop. Obviously this isn't going to serve everyone going to QC, but it's worth a shot to see how many students it does end up carrying. I know in Delaware most students were in class roughly 9am-3pm. That window syncs up pretty well with what the schedule for this bus could be (my bus out of UD leaves at 3:50PM and that time seems to work well for students). It would be the last bus inbound and the first bus outbound that would see the most riders I'm guessing. Also there are those coming from Manhattan, but the way this bus would be scheduled it probably wouldn't mesh well with the student schedules (arrive way too early in the AM). That also begs the question, do most reverse commuters board the LIRR at NYP, or are they getting on at stops like Woodside, Flushing, and Jamaica?

because you then have riders transfer from the LIRR there to a bus which goes to 6th Avenue, 3rd Avenue, or Wall Street. This way they do not have to transfer at Zone 1 stations or at Jamaica.

But the Express Bus is generally a one seat ride and there are many people who value a one seat ride. Northern Boulevard is not too terrible when you compare it to other roads in our area. If you ride the train out to Douglaston or Little Neck you have to drive (and parking can be scarce and hard to find) from the LIRR station as the Q79 no longer exists (and even when it ran, the service was not timed well with LIRR trains and ran a limited service span)

Which park and ride would you suggest using, exit 52 or exit 49? I've come up with the following run time estimates:

LIE 52 express to Manhattan: 1hr 40min
LIE 52, LIE 49, express to Manhattan: 1hr 45min
LIE 52, LIE 49, LIE 36, express to Manhattan: 1hr 50min

From Melville is approximately 1hr 30min if going non-stop
From Searingtown is approximately 1hr 10min if going non-stop

From Dix Hills to midtown by train is roughly 1hr 30mins with the driving time included, so the bus would really only offer time savings if going to the financial district (which I'm betting a good chunk of the Dix Hills area is destined for). However, Long Island Transit is roughly 1hr 30min from Glen Cove to midtown while the LIRR is 1hr 10min, so perhaps some folks would just accept the 15 min longer ride?

Q79 could have been better integrated with the LIRR. And if the one seat ride to the east side was so important, then why did X51 get axed?

From places like Mineola or Valley Stream the bus will take much longer than the train since there's plenty of express service from those stops, and the cost will probably just be as much since any privately run bus service will need to charge higher fares just to afford operating costs. Why waste time serving those areas when there are plenty of areas on Long Island that are miles from the nearest LIRR station that could really use service to their community?

The QM3 serves places in NE Queens that are much farther out in addition to being subsidized by NYC as it is under MTA Bus. The X51 bus' trend is that as there were and are fewer white people in Flushing (specifically that area where the X51 ran), the more the ridership declined. When the X51 started, there were not nearly as many Asians in Flushing as there are today and Flushing was mostly white/middle or working class. Keep in mind, the heavier QM3 stops and a lot of the ridership tends to be the more east you go on that line. The X51 primarily serviced areas relatively close to Downtown Flushing compared to the QM3. The QM3, on the other hand, gets very close to the Nassau border and the farther from the Subway you go, the more ridership potential there is. Also the Asian population has their own vans that run to Manhattan which also produced an effect on the X51's ridership as the Asian population in Flushing grew and is still growing.

Either 49 or 52 would probably work. There is a decent-sized crowd going from Dix Hills to the Park/Madison Avenue area between Grand Central and the high 50's in addition to downtown.

I think you will lose far more than 5 minutes by adding a stop at 36. If someone can drive to the P/R at 36, they can drive another 5-10 minutes and have faster and more frequent service from Mineola.

If I remember correctly, you can't get back onto the westbound HOV lane anywhere west of exit 39 so you'll sit in traffic many days. If you are in the HOV lane, most days you can average 50+ MPH until around the Clearview (where the LIE narrows to 3 lanes). From there, I can't help you estimate how long it would take to get to the tunnel, but it will be very slow.

You are correct, there's no entrance to the HOV if you come on at 36 and yes, between 36 and 39 things can get pretty bad so the HOV is vital coming through there. I think an express making 52 and 49 and then running non-stop to the city would do well. Perhaps have it tied in with a bus coming from further east, stopping at either 49 or 52 along the way (not both though because it'll add too much time for those coming from the eastern stops).

So riders in that area could take those routes to the Mall to get the Express bus.

Also I don't think other motorests would like a huge coach bus stoping on a road that onely has one lane in either direction.

No one wants to ride a bus to another bus. If that's the case they might as well ride to the LIRR and catch that. These buses would be stopping in park and rides, but even if they were stopping in the street how is that any different from a suffolk transit bus stopping on the street?

I didn't say that there would be a diffrence between a Transit bus stoping on the street and a Coach bus stopping on the street. Though a coach bus is between either 40 and 45 feet long, where as a Transit bus driving in most of the areas you mention is 35 feet, so the turning radius for the bus to pull away from the stop may be a bit diffrent.

Second there aren't and probably won't be any park and rides made in the areas that you propose these bus routes.

Also I've taken one but to another to get where I wasgoing, and I don't mind, and also I haven't heard other riders complain about have to transfer from one bus to another.

Yeah those are people already riding. Folks who drive aren't goin to do it. And notice how I put all my stops at existing park and rides, near municipal parking, or at shopping centers. The idea is to see if these shopping centers would consider having the spaces used during the day for commuters

I hate to burst your bubble but there are a few problems with your ending in Port Jefferson.

1) It isn't a Park and Ride
2) The parking lot is Metered parking
3) That road way is a bit narrow
and 4) That Parking Lot gets crowded so it seems very unlikely that a 40 to 45 foot Coach bus would be able to use it.

The Meters were put in with in the last two to three years. Though far as long as I've known the area (nearly twenty years) that has never ever been a park and ride.

The closest thing to a park and ride is a old vacant lot next to the 7-Eleven, which they only fixed up because the 7-Eleven needed another exit since the road work on NYS112 took one exit away. I have no idea what they used it for prior to that. Though it was unused in the 90's though people did litter.

I wanted to add that in theory you can view the QM3 as a part of the QM2 family as it serves what can be seen as the southernmost parts of that general area and like the QM2, QM20 also uses the Lower Level of the Queensboro Bridge and Northern Boulevard. They should also look into removing the Jackson Heights/Corona stops as they already have quietly removed the Northern Blvd and Main St stop in both directions back in 2010.
