Bus ridership seems to be down almost across the board. Also interesting to see that the implementation of Select Bus Service has not had the same type of positive impact on ridership that has been seen in some other cities where BRT service was introduced. |

Also interesting to see that the implementation of Select Bus Service has not had the same type of positive impact on ridership that has been seen in some other cities where BRT service was introduced.Probably because other cities' BRT systems attract a large number of choice riders, but in New York the choice riders are already using the system. |

Boston's Silver Line along Washington Street saw a significant increase in ridership over its predecessor route 49 bus – some of those might have been new patrons from adjacent South End neighborhoods, but I suspect that a portion of the increase was existing transit riders on the bus routes through Dudley Square who now take the Silver Line instead of the bus/Orange Line journey via Ruggles. I though the M15 in particular might have seen an increase from people who no longer walk over to the Lexington Ave. subway. |

They say this year, they're not counting "non-revenue passengers" in the stats the release to the public (However, I assume they'll be counting them in the internal stats). They say they've adjusted it for the previous years, but I don't think they did, which explains the large drop in ridership on some routes. |

No. I thought it was some error with not counting Student MetroCards, but they say they counted riders with passes, so I guess that wasn't it.They say that this year, they didn't count "non-revenue passengers" (farebeaters and little kids) because the students dip in a pass, so I assume the error wasn't due to not counting Student MetroCards, but to not counting farebeaters. |

Do you have ridership stats for the 49 and Silver Line? The Silver Line seems like a big waste of money. They spent a lot on fancy shelters that have no sides, and put up one inconspicuous sign per block making the right lane a bus lane on a street that doesn't have much traffic. And there's no prepaid fare collection. So it isn't much faster than what it replaced. The counterflow lane across the Mass Pike saves some time. But that was a very small part of the cost. |

I guess that's fair. Previously, did they just count farebeaters towards ridership numbers for statistical purposes? Or did they include them in the count to determine service levels as well? |

I'm pretty sure they counted them to determine service levels. The thing is that BrooklynBus mentioned that they don't count people coming in through the back door (whether they're farebeaters or they couldn't fit in through the front) |

The ridership stats are available on the MBTA’s website with a little digging. Patronage did jump significantly. The lack of dedicated bus lanes is unfortunate and the overall execution may be flawed (enforcement of the bus-only lanes is woeful and I agree that those shelters are terribly designed) but the concept has merit – a tightly-operated Silver Line service could and should be an asset to the community even in its present iteration. Unfortunately, the MBTA has a history of poorly-operated bus service and the SL4 and SL5 are no exception. Advocates need to get over the fact that it isn’t a streetcar - the FTA was never going to pay for a Green Line extension after shelling out three-quarters of a billion dollars for the Southwest Corridor - and start demanding better operation of the service they do have by the T. |

They're taking up space, aren't they? If a person gets flagged, it doesn't matter whether 100% of the people paid, or 50% of the people paid, or 0% of the people paid.Personally, I don't think it's a huge deal. I have a problem with people who walk by texting on a cell phone or something, but other than that, if somebody's financial situation is such that they need a free ride, that's none of my business. |

There shouldn't be an excuse to avoid paying. |

However the fare enforcement target will largely remain on the Subways because the politicians feel more of a need to protect the Subway system from other dangers such as terrorism than the buses. The reason that people do not pay the fare is because they can get away with it especially when you have B/O's who work routes like the B35, B46, or the Bx41 who know NOT to start trouble with any of the riders and when you have Express Bus routes with cult ridership like the X20 where ridership figures were depressed due to non payment of fare. Not to go away from the topic but local buses will always be lower on the priority list than the Subways and Express Buses in the politicians point of view. |

You're kidding me about the X20. It ran once an hour and was surrounded by a ton of frequent routes. Its ridership figures weren't "depressed". Its ridership was really that low. |

They have the F5 button on the express buses too.In any case, whether the riders were counted or not, they would've still cut the route for the simple reason that it duplicates a bunch of other routes. |

You have to consider that1) The route is less than 6 miles long, so a longer route would naturally get more riders. 2) Even if buses get crowded in Flushing, there might be less turnover than other routes, which lowers ridership. |
