In related news, water is wet...

But, seriously, I would suspect that most bus fans in North Jersey had a feeling Academy was going to take over the #10 bus once Red & Tan announced their intent to cease operations.

With Academy doing both the 10 and the 119 would it be possible to convert non-rush hour 10 trips into 119s with local stops(eliminating the 88C in the process)?

I would think available gate space at PABT might be an issue as might potential demand for off-peak service. Otherwise, that's not a bad idea.

NJ Transit, Academy Bus, Bayonne and Jersey City team up to maintain Boulevard bus route

Bayonne and Jersey City residents reliant on public transportation can breathe a little easier.

There will be no stoppage in service to the #10 bus route on Kennedy Blvd. between Bayonne and Journal Square, thanks to an agreement between Bayonne, Jersey City, NJ Transit and Academy Bus company.

Academy will take over the #10 Kennedy Blvd. route that Coach USA's Red & Tan Tours is dropping on April 8.

According to a press release from the city of Bayonne, Academy will cover the #10 route from April 8 until November, when NJ Transit can put the route out for bids on permanent bus service.

Mayor Mark Smith of Bayonne had previously demanded that Coach USA continue running the #10 bus until an alternative could be found. Representatives from the company said the April 8 end date would be firm, but the agreement with Academy means bus service on Kennedy Blvd. will continue uninterrupted.

"We are happy to report that an accommodation has been reached that will provide for uninterrupted service for the citizens of both Bayonne and Jersey City," Smith said in the press release. "The Boulevard bus will continue to operate and provide an important transportation link for our communities."

Originally, I'd figured that Greenville might get it but it makes sense since Academy has the #119 going to Bayonne. I think this is NJT's first #10 route.

So, since this was an CoachUSA line for so many years, NJT owes the line now or does Academy owns it?

And, I would imagine that R&T gives those nice new NABI's to Academy now, I bet.

If a bus service does not transport passengers in interstate commerce, then states (and municipalities) can regulate. The problem is that if a company discontinues all of its service contrary to law, and has no assets, then it becomes very difficult to enforce (the 13th amendment makes it difficult to compel drivers to work a bus route if the company has no money with which to pay them). In this case, I believe that the no. 10 was the only bus route being operated by Trans Hudson Express, and if the company had no assets, and no one wanted to financially support the company, how could it continue, notwithstanding any legal "compulsion" to operate?

Given the use of NJT timetables, and the intent to "bid" it out later this year, I would expect that the route will be owned (or claimed) by NJT.

It's not that close. The only area where they are close is by 8th Street. At 22nd Street, JFK Blvd is about 1/2 mile from the HBLR, and they get further apart as you go further north. I mean, JFK Blvd passes by Journal Square, whereas the HBLR goes all the way by Exchange Place.

I definitely wouldn't consider them duplicative. If that's the case, then the B44 is duplicative with the Brighton Line and there are plenty of other instances.

Plus, even if they were duplicative, they still serve different ridership bases.

Hmmmm. Think this is a case of maybe HBLR making an new extension to Journal Square from any of the normal start points? I would of said Newark Light Rail should have a extension going towards Journal Square but they have the PATH for that, the cheapest way to get to NWK to JC, IMO.

This is not the first #10 route that NJT has ever been involved with. To my knowledge, there were two. The first was inherited from Maplewood Equipment Company. It was a PABT route that ran up the Bergenline Avenue corridor. It was merged with a #6 and a #61 line to form what is today's #156 Englewood Cliffs-New York route.

The other #10 route was in the southern and central part of the state. It was a single round trip running between Camden (the old bus terminal as it pre-dated Walter Rand TC) and Fort Monmouth, then an active army base. It ran eastbound very early in the morning and westbound late at night. Essentially it was a revenue equipment move for the #317 Asbury Park-Philadelphia route, getting a bus from its home garage in Camden to Asbury Park to start the first morning trip to Philly, and reversing that process with the last #317 in the evening. With that #10 line long cancelled, nowadays the #317 bus deadheads.

Only thing that I could honestly think of is make a new set of tracks, which would go through a newly made underground tunnel, similar to the Bergenline Ave tunnel, have a stop on Central, and then a stop at Journal Square. Maybe then continue and have a stop on Kennedy Blvd, then try to reconnect to the West Side Avenue branch...?

The area is dense enough that you could almost justify having light rail run down JFK Blvd from Bayonne to Journal Square and possibly into The Heights. The problem is that some parts of the street are residential, so you can't really elevate it, and I don't think you could justify taking out a traffic lane for it (plus, you'll still need something that stops every couple of blocks for the seniors and people making short trips)

That's what I thought too, but from what I've heard, there are a lot of dollar vans along JFK Blvd, which sort of act as a limited (for instance, during middays, the 10 runs every 20 minutes, but it's probably because vans steal some of the ridership, or else it would probably run more frequently enough so that both the local and limited passengers have enough service)

That's why the real name of that system is the Newark City Subway. (Sorry, but NJT's new name is something I'll never use.) Routes 21 and 29 used to run in there when they were trolleys, just like SEPTA's subway-surface operation (as did a Central Avenue route numbered 23).

I don't recall hearing many incidents of passengers falling out, but indeed, not the safest way to do things. Coupled with slower acceleration; less passenger floor space; slower fare payment; and higher proportion of passengers requiring excess time to board and alight, it is no surprise that transit speeds today are much slower than years past. "Limited-stop" service simply returns speeds to where they were before (albeit with fewer access points).
