MTA bus future (part 1): buy less hybrid$ / more on: Diesel & CNG; WHY?

Since no one posted about the MTA board meeting back in May 2010, there is bunch of important information in the future of MTA buying buses. I will divide into parts focusing on the subject.

The MTA Bus Operations presented in the MTA CPOC board meeting in May. In the presentation, it discusses the study on the current fleet and analyzed future bus purchases. The cost benefit analysis on the current fleet was conducted back in January 2010. You can thank Jay Walder for that suggestion in which he ordered back in November 2009 during the last bus presentation.

Currently right now, MTA is using clean diesel, CNG, electric hybrid with clean diesel fuel and turbine hybrid powered on many different buses. But in the future, MTA will buy less electric hybrids, more on clean diesels and CNG buses.

The study recommends buy more regular clean ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) then diesel electric hybrid buses.

REASON WHY?
– MUCH CHEAPER then diesel electric hybrid bus ($175,000+ price difference per bus); plus you do not need to change/replace batteries, for lead acid is 2 to 3 years and lithium-ion is about 6 years, added weight with the hybrid components, higher maintenance cost. What wonderful savings!!!!
– Fuel usage difference:
A. above 8 mph, regular clean diesel bus runs better (IT PAYS TO OPERATE)
B. lower 8 mph, use hybrid; (better fuel economy savings and it doesn’t tax the battery system that often)
– Regular clean diesel fuel is currently less expensive.
– Fuel economy is ROUGHLY THE SIMILAR in high mileage and high speed routes
– Electric hybrids performed much better in traffic congestion areas and gains fuel efficiency.
– CO2 emissions function as fuel economy: More fuel you use, the more CO2 emissions they are: Clean diesel buses have virtually the same emissions profiles as electric hybrids on New York City roads. Electric hybrids are much effective at or below 5.5 mph. Clean diesel is the better alternative at above average speed of 8 mph.

WHY continue buy CNG buses?
– MTA has invested lots of money into CNG infrastructure facilities. It will be such a waste to abandoned it (like TTC or NJ Transit {about to pull the plug}).
– CNG technology has been improving over the course in lifetime.
– CNG prices are currently LOW in years.
– It is CHEAPER to operate a CNG bus then a regular clean diesel bus.
– Long Island Bus’ 2008-2009 Orion VII Next Generation low floor (CNG fuel) has 30%+ improves fuel economy then the old 1996-1998 Orion V standard floor (CNG fuel) with Cummins L10G engine. Plus it has the highest MDBF rating then the older buses.

To sum up, MTA is not going to purchase mass quantity of diesel electric hybrid buses like the previous MTA bitch’ Orion VII bus orders, they will still purchase but in small quantities like 100 to 200 buses in each contract RFP. The otherside, CNG purchases increase and the return of clean diesel bus orders in 40 foot bus category in the future.

Note that after 2015, the fuel diversity in the entire MTA bus fleet of clean diesel is decreasing by 50% in the 10 year period, while hybrids still increase dramatically which make the majority of the whole, so does CNG increase a little bit -- still a minority.

The next topic (Next new post separated from this thread), part 2 will be discussing some interesting figures on bus expectancy life cost and numbers....

Those ex-Bee Line O5s are 14-15 years old. The LaGuardia Depot ones numbered 101-129 for many years were assigned to a weekday-only garage, which is why LGA's lower units aren't that bad.

In addition, Brewer Boulevard is a terrible street.

I'm a bit surprised at the statement that CNG are cheeper, I thought:
- More expensive to operate
- More expensive to maintain

And because of the above they didn't want any more, i.e. keep some around for depots that are set up to service them, but don't expand them into other depots.

I believe the tables actually have turned in recent years. With all of the requirements for "clean diesel" these days, with the filters, converters, etc, as well as the emissions requirements getting more strict every few years, I think CNG is looking better. You don't need all of the extra emissions stuff.

Also, as the report stated, CNG fuel is MUCH cheaper than diesel right now. Plus, from my casual obervations, the ISL-G seems to be a much stronger and stable CNG (bus) engine than anything that was offered before. I'm glad they decided to take a second look at CNG, and we may have LI Bus to thank for that.

Go sunk cost fallacy!

CNG technology has been improving over the course in lifetime.

Did they really say that? Is this a direct quote from the material? It seems completely foolish to tout the advances made to natural gas combustion engines while ignoring the advances hybrid electric systems have made in the same time. Why hasn't the MTA looked at ultracapacitors? Why aren't we seeing a greater battery/diesel power ratio now that lithium ion batteries allow greater power density to reduce deep cycling and improve lifespans? There are a great many advances which have been made to hybrid vehicles which are not reflected in the MTA's hybrid bus fleet, yet that appears to be the standard by which they are measuring.

CNG prices are currently LOW in years.

Except the folks at the DOE's Energy Information Administration are forecasting the greatest percentage increase in natural gas prices amongst every available power source for the coming year. And that's taking in to account the moratorium on deepwater drilling and the impact that would have on worldwide crude oil prices.

The "lousy" 1996 Novas Manhattan "got rid of" weren't actually half bad, esp after rehab work done to them, as is the case with many if not all the 1996 Novas...they aren't really a bad bus, they just don't look good worth shit anymore, depending on the garage that maintains them, but at least they run good... Say what you want about those buses, but I'd argue that those are among the last quality built RTS's that we have, so if they last THIS long, even in garages with less-than-desirable maintenance, they must be pretty damn good.

That is all.

Why hasn't the MTA looked at ultracapacitors?

Its funny you ask this. About 4 years ago a 6300 hybrid was fitted with capacitors as a test. From what maintainence told me it worked great and would save the company money from having to change the batteries every 3-4 years.
Then he said to me sarcastically thats probably why we won't switch over to them.
These contracts for replacement parts sometimes make more money for the insiders who get them then the original cost of the bus itself!

That may not happen As new supply is coming on line faster than demNd. Nat gas is used at factories. Also cng prices are very depressed. $6-7 nat gas will be the norm which is still cheaper than deseil. Like it or not, the gov is going to push fleets to nat gas. You will see hybrid nat gas buses. The price diff between the hybrids, nat gas and deseil price buses will shrink big time in the next few years

I love the RTS, just not oldest oldest ones. You Bronxers can have the crappy AC ones though.

I wouldn't hate the 1996 Novas so much if it wasn't for 2008 Grand Avenue changes, and being the oldest buses. Fresh Pond should just close down that way, MTA has no place to dump them. That way, I could enjoy nothing but 1998 RTS.

Their is tons of money being put into building better CNG engines. NYCT needs a diversity of fuels.

LACMTA Never had or experimented with DD50EGR engines.

Metro are currently repowering all the Lot 1 NABIs with the ISL-G. Already they are experiencing mechanical bugs/issues with the ISL-G...so they are not happy with Cummins at the moment.

The Lot 2 and 3 NABIs will be repowered with the Dootsan-MAN engine once all the bugs are worked out in 2 test units ( #7540 and 7615 ).

Wait, the JG ones outlasted WHICH ones? How can that be if there are still 1996 Novas still running around? Unless you are talking about units that were Bronx Division originals? Because there are 8700s and 8900s still running around in Manhattanville as well as the Bronx (i.e. that 8700 sighting out of Eastchester)...

And the ONLY reason why the JG 1995 Orions might have outlasted them is because the JG Orion Vs aren't subject to nearly as much use/abuse in Brooklyn as the 1996 Novas in the Bronx (The only JG routes you might find heavy use is the B35 and maybe the B8, the Bronx as a majority is fully of high-ridership routes with heavy abuse)...

Walnut's high-use routes historically included the Bx4, Bx5, Bx15, and Bx19
Kingsbridge's historically included the Bx1/2, Bx7, Bx9, Bx41, Bx55, and M100
Gun Hill's historically included the Bx12, Bx22, Bx39, Bx40/42, and most if not all the Co-op City lines...

Much potential for buses to be driven down to the ground, especially if not maintained properly. Most of the time, the buses never got cosmetically maintained is because once the bus gets driven to the ground and taken into the shop to get fixed, all of the fixings get unfixed by the same use and abuse that warranted a shop fix in the first place, so it didn't make sense, almost fostering a lax work ethic....but I'd be damned if those buses didn't run and take the abuse...

Got me where I needed to go all the years I was living in The Bronx...

A few 96 Novas have went down due to natrual causes, they was 9095, 9303, 8950, 9111 and serveral of the Cummins RTS which are FP orginals btw, while these so called crap 8800s from KB still trooper on. There are some others but I don't rembember the #. I just realized something, the Ex Green Lines Vs from 1997 outlived FP 98 Novas 9528 & 9529, LMAO!!!

Anyway his point his invaild since theres a shitload of 96 Novas still in service and the JG Vs would have been dead by now if it wasn't for CP needing extra buses for service. From what I read here theres an order of NG CNGs coming in wheres the Designline order is an hot mess so who knows when that order is really gonna get going. If I was an betting man, I'm pretty sure the 96 Novas will outlast those 10 JG Vs at CP, also another point, notice how ECH ONLY uses 96 Novas for local service, if those buses were crap I'm pretty sure it would be posted here about how ECH is having issues making score on the QBX1.

Manhattanville is currently 100% hybrids now since July 4.
Our last ones were 9000 series.

Oh, I know, I meant system-wide...speaking of Manhattanville, I kinda miss the 9000s at MHV, I really miss RTS's out of MHV period...well, at least 126 and MJQ are the only two RTS strongholds in Manhattan Division these days... :(
