Re: NJT Proposed fares/cuts - The official release

[I agree that the bulk of the ridership is to Toms River....in both directions. On many a southbound # 319 trip {I ride it frequently} there are only a handful of passengers south of Toms River. But I'll admit, Summertime is different. But that's only two months out of the whole year. The other ten months are like I say. I fully expected NJT to end most trips at Toms River.]

The solution might be...

- Base service between NYC and Toms River, with skeletal service (or no service) south of Toms River for most of the year.

- Seasonal full service to AC.

Don't they have the 137 and 559 for that?

Plenty of competing buses filling the gap between New York and Atlantic City. The state should leave that market alone, like they now leave the PABT-EWR market alone. If they really want New York-Atlantic City service, let them fix up the former CNJ Southern Division and run it over the rails . . . (like they should have done for ACES)

Agreed with the one exception that the casino line run services (i.e. Academy and Greyhound) and NJT largely serve two different demographics....most NJT riders either are regional commuters or have a continuing trip within South Jersey. Not everybody going to AC is heading to a casino.

Abandoining the NJT market would either require some form of indirect interlining agreement btwn. Academy or GLI for those passengers or an operating subsidy.

In the case of both Academy and GLI over the past two years, they have been cutting capacity rather than adding in response to falling demand for leisure travel to the casinos...

The 319 takes one hour to AC from Toms River. The 559 takes almost 2 hours.

How much business does the 319 take from the 559, though?

I'm not sure. The 319 is substantially faster, but less frequent. The 559 is a milk run.

Here's something weird, on weekends a 137 leaves 5 minutes before a 319 for part of the day. But both buses are busy, and if they cut the 137 the 319 would have standees.
They should leave those routes alone, period. It'd make better sense to cut the 67 back to Freehold Raceway Mall and have alternating 559's (every other hour) go via the old 67 route to Lakewood.
However, there is one 319 run that could be canned, the 4:11pm out of NWK, runs just 1 minute ahead of the 4:45pm out of PABT.
They leave from Toms River for ACY at 6:20pm and 6:21pm!
If NJT is going ahead with its plans for the 60 route, the 319 runs from NWK would be a waste, as well as those 67X runs to/from Newark.

I see quite a few folks use the 319 bound for ACY from Toms River, especially on weekends.

Yeah I always wondered why it was so "cheap" to travel from the PABT to that part of Bergen County!

But do you think that's one of the contributing factors to the decline of the GWB services? I think another one is that for most people, it's just not very convenient to take a relatively short bus ride over the bridge and then a loong subway ride down to midtown or downtown... of course if your destination is somewhere uptown or the UWS, the GWB is pretty convenient. Another factor might be the lack of a peak-hour XBL like at the Lincoln Tunnel.

Yet another factor may very well be the "Spanish Bus", especially along Route 4. They're obviously doing something right - minibuses running every 5 minutes throughout the day, for most of the day, at a lower fare than NJT and R&T. I would love to know what the 171 bus was like before the Spanish Bus came around. Hell, even in the late 90's the 171 had a much higher level of service IIRC.

The 178 has dropped from 30 minute service middays to 60 minute service. The 186 has cut schedules and dropped the route 4 express. The R&T 11C was hourly middays in 1994, it's now every 2 hours. Those NJT routes are not directly affected by the Route 4 minibuses, and the 11C leaves the highway in Teaneck anyway.

Meanwhile, 167 service has increased notably... as I mentioned, in 1982, there were 36 trips out of the PABT between 3:30 and 7. In 1997, it was 45. In 2010, it's 54.

$3.40 (NJT)/$3.35 (R&T) from Teaneck to the GWB, or $3.40 to the PABT that doesn't require the extra $2.25 of the A train? If your money is tight, that's a very easy decision.

As for 40/171 service... (number change was 1983)
1982 - 15 minutes rush hours, 30 minutes midday
1998 - 10-15 minutes rush, 30 minutes midday
2010 - 30 minutes rush, 40-45 minutes midday

"Spanish Bus" or Express Service private van operations are basically run like taxis in New York - they saturate the actual market to the point that the frequency is what draws people in...it does not necessarily translate into a windfall in profits though.

I would never take those things though. If only NJT improved service along Rt.4 and got the money and pax back in the system instead of some shady cab company.
They are the NJ equivalent of dollar vans.
